Vebron – Film Festival, History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Vebron
Vebron lies south of Florac, between the Gorges du Tarn and the Gorges de Jonte, and between Mont-Aigoual and Mont-Lozère. The commune extends west across the Causse Méjean plateau and east into the Cévennes; its main villages lie in the Tarnon Valley.
Film festival as a recurring reason to visit
The International Film Festival of Vébron has been held every year since 1988. The official competition includes more than twelve hours of film screenings, featuring films from around the world. Some film evenings are held outdoors, followed by conferences and discussions.
The festival takes place in the third week of July. The Temple de Vébron serves as a venue, and admission is free. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the current program in advance, as details may vary from one edition to the next.
Architectural history and historic sites
The Church of Saint-Pierre de Vébron dates from the 12th or 13th century. In the 14th century, the Priory of Vébron was dependent on the Monastery of Sainte-Enimie. The Temple de Vébron has a coffered ceiling, fine woodwork, monumental pulpits, and elaborately crafted family pews with backs.
The castles also make their own mark on the area’s history and landscape: Château Châteauroux stands on a schist outcrop overlooking the valley. The Château de Salgas was rebuilt in the 18th century by the Catholic de Bernis family. The region’s history therefore ranges from religious buildings and their furnishings to local castles.
Hiking trails and viewpoints
The Les corniches de l’Hospitalet loop is an easy 4.3-kilometer route that takes two hours. It passes through Vebron and offers remarkable views over the Tarnon Valley and the Causse Méjean. The route runs through the core area of the Cévennes National Park. Check trail conditions before setting out and follow the national park’s regulations.
Le Castelas offers another view of the Cévennes: this natural viewpoint lies on the cliffs of the Causse Méjean, 300 meters above the village of Les Vanels. You can reach it on foot via a farm track. Check local conditions before setting out.
The Broussous circular hike starts in the village square in Vébron, follows the banks of the Tarnon, and offers views of the cliffs of the Causse Méjean from the Can de l’Hospitalet plateau. On the return, it crosses the old bridge in Vébron. Allow three and a half hours for the loop; both the ascent and descent are 330 meters. A small gorge forms beneath the old bridge, where you can cool off.
The listed walking times differ by an hour and a half. For Les corniches de l’Hospitalet, the easy difficulty rating and 4.3-kilometer distance are also specified; for Broussous, the elevation gain and loss help with planning. You can weigh up the duration, distance, ascent and descent alongside the scenery.
