La Tieule – Hiking and Heritage on the Causse de Sauveterre
Accommodation in La Tieule
La Tieule combines hiking on the Causse de Sauveterre with cultural history and rural experiences. The signposted Du Lot au Causse de Sauveterre route passes through the commune; the La Tieule hiking trail runs above the Lot Valley at an altitude of around 900 metres. This gives you two distinct route options to consider when planning your trip: a route through La Tieule and a hike on the Causse.
Hiking and landscape
The La Tieule hiking trail showcases architecture typical of the Causses: stone houses and roofs made from local slate. The landscape explored by the trail has been shaped over centuries by shepherds and farmers. Allow around three hours for the La Tieule circular walk; this gives you a practical guide when planning your day. The programme for the Trail de La Tieule for the 2026 summer season included races of 26 km, 17 km and 7 km.
The trail is accessible via the A75, the D167 or the D67. Parking is available in front of the town hall. The Vallon de l’Urugne Natura 2000 site encompasses four communes, including La Tieule. Its landscape alternates between woodland and open farmland, with hedgerows and wooded banks along watercourses. The hiking trail highlights the building style of the Causses, while the Vallon showcases a succession of different landscape features.
Traces of cultural history
The Church of Saint-Barthélemy houses a 17th-century Pietà , listed as a historic monument. The church also contains a monumental altarpiece made of painted wood, with a large central depiction of the Crucifixion. The two works offer different points of interest: the Pietà for its date and listed status, and the altarpiece for its central subject and monumental design.
The Ecuries de Sauveterre in La Tieule were formerly referred to as a “monastery”. The former monastery is considered typical of the Causses. The Les sentiers d’Auxillac hiking trail also passes by historical sites: near the hamlet of La Tieule, it goes by Merovingian tombs, also known as Jewish tombs.
Rural life and a culinary route
At Aux Saveurs d'Autre Foie, a visit to a typical farm on the Causse de Sauveterre offers an introduction to rural life and the animals raised there. The farm shop sells products from the farm’s breeding of fattening ducks, ostriches and lambs. The visit and the shop therefore offer two different insights into the farm: life on the farm and the products it offers.
The Itinéraire gourmand – Causses gastronomic tour begins in La Tieule. As route details may change, check the latest information before setting out.
This makes it possible to decide whether hiking, heritage or rural experiences should shape your stay.
