Le Malzieu-Ville combines a medieval townscape with natural features along the Truyère and themes of history, outdoor activities and music. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, these different highlights can shape your trip planning: perhaps you are particularly interested in historical walks, the Margeride or an annual event. The town’s features can help you decide which aspects of the destination suit your interests.

Medieval townscape and history

The Cité médiévale du Malzieu lies on the banks of the Truyère. Cobblestone lanes, fortified towers, town walls and restored gates define its medieval appearance. The Centre historique du Malzieu walking tour uses 27 information panels to introduce local heritage and notable figures. This connects the town’s architectural features with stories about the place.

The historical walking tour of Le Malzieu-Ville covers different periods and subjects: the Middle Ages, the Wars of Religion, the Bête du Gévaudan and the Maquis du Mont-Mouchet. The Way of St. James offers another historical connection. Le Malzieu was a stopping point for pilgrims coming from Le Puy-en-Velay. They crossed the Truyère at the Pont Notre-Dame and continued towards Aubrac. This stopping point and river crossing make the town’s connection to the pilgrimage route tangible.

The Musée de l'ancien couvent des Ursulines focuses on sacred art in its permanent collection, which includes liturgical vestments and objects. The museum spans three levels featuring wall paintings. It offers a different way to explore the past than the walking tours: here, the focus is on the art collection and wall paintings, while the tours cover the townscape and various historical subjects.

Events throughout the year

If you would like to plan your trip around a recurring event, the dates provided are a useful starting point. The Trail Margeride takes place every year on the second weekend of September and features four races and a hike. The Médiévales du Malzieu are held every year over the Ascension Day weekend. Classical music is the focus of the Rencontres Musicales du Malzieu.

Nature and activities in the Margeride

Numerous local and migratory bird species have been recorded at the Plan d'eau de la Truyère; the lake is also a habitat for the otter. The area around the Plan d'eau is suitable for walks and discovering the natural environment. These natural features differ from the historical themes found in the townscape: here, the focus is on birdlife, otters and the landscape.

For a longer circular route, the GRP Tour de la Margeride – La Boucle du Malzieu is a specific option to consider: it is 42 kilometres long and runs through the northern part of Lozère, in the heart of the Margeride. The Via-Ferrata du Malzieu offers spectacular views of the Truyère gorges. Its two physical difficulty levels cater to beginners and experienced via ferrata climbers alike. From Le Malzieu, follow the RD 47 for 700 metres in the direction of Saint-Léger-du-Malzieu to reach the via ferrata, then take the first road on the left towards Le Ranc. The via ferrata is freely accessible all year round; check the access conditions on site before using it.

La Cavale du Malzieu offers horseback rides from the medieval hamlet of Le Malzieu-Ville, allowing you to explore the Margeride on horseback. Ponies are available for hire for young children. As well as walking tours and routes, horseback activities are another option available in the area.
