The hamlets of Altier stretch across the northern slope of Mont Lozère. The commune includes 2,400 hectares in the core zone of the Cévennes National Park. Landscapes, protected nature and historic buildings give a stay in Altier a range of different highlights.

Landscapes and river nature

The type 1 ZNIEFF “Rivière de l'Altier entre les Rochettes Basses et le lac de Villefort” includes Altier and covers around 11 kilometres of the Altier River upstream of Lac de Villefort. It includes both the core zone and the membership zone of the Cévennes National Park. The species listed there include the white-clawed crayfish, known in French as Écrevisse à pieds blancs.

The landscape information therefore spans several different scales: the hamlets on the northern slope, areas within the park’s core zone, and a more precisely defined stretch of river. Those interested in natural areas will also find a specific name to help orient themselves: the ZNIEFF concerns the Altier River between Les Rochettes Basses and Lac de Villefort.

Routes around Altier

The Le Fossat route is a moderately difficult circular walk covering 10.8 kilometres. It starts and ends in Altier and takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. Along the route, you can discover Altier and its hamlets, as well as the fortified castle and the village church. Highlights also include an unobstructed view of the northern slope of Mont Lozère and the descent through the Valat de La Rouvière. Check current route conditions before setting off.

A much longer route is the 91.3-kilometre Boucle du Goulet aux barrages, which also passes through Altier. You can compare the two routes by distance: Le Fossat covers 10.8 kilometres, while the Boucle du Goulet aux barrages covers 91.3 kilometres. Check route conditions before setting out on either route.

Château du Champ and Saint-Privat Church

Château du Champ’s appearance is defined by six towers and turrets, and its keep has a wall walk. Its main construction phases date to the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Its façades, roofs and garden were listed as a historic monument by decree of 14 April 1965. Château du Champ can only be visited on Heritage Days; check the visiting dates before you arrive.

Saint-Privat Church in Altier is first mentioned in 1123. After suffering severe damage during the Wars of Religion in 1572, much of it was rebuilt in the 17th century. Its single-nave church has a pointed barrel vault, while the semicircular apse has a domical vault. These technical terms refer to different types of vault. The church is permanently open for individual visits without a guide. Check local access conditions before your arrival.
