Between Rivers and Gorges

Meyrueis lies at the confluence of the Jonte, Brèze and Béthuzon rivers. The village is also in the heart of the Parc National des Cévennes, in the Gorges de la Jonte between the Causses and the Cévennes. The gorges stretch for about 20 kilometres between Meyrueis and Le Rozier and are classified as a Grand Site de France. To get your bearings, it is worth distinguishing between these scales: the confluence describes the location of the village, while the roughly 20 kilometres refers to the length of the gorge between the two towns.

Historic Centre and Temple

The historic centre includes medieval and Renaissance houses, a tower and gates from the town’s fortifications, as well as elegant townhouses along picturesque lanes. The Temple protestant de Meyrueis makes its own architectural statement: the neoclassical building has an octagonal (eight-sided) floor plan unique in Lozère; its shell was completed in 1842. The Temple has been protected as a Monument historique since 24 September 2008. It is open to the public in summer and hosts various cultural events, particularly concerts. As opening arrangements are seasonal, check summer visiting opportunities and the current cultural programme before your visit.

Trails and Excursions from Meyrueis

A trail leads from the village centre to the summit of Rocher du Château, offering panoramic views of the town. Since the early Middle Ages, the rock has been topped by the fortress of the Barons of Meyrueis. A family hike also starts in Meyrueis and leads to a 16th-century castle. The first trail combines views over the town with the history of a medieval fortress; the family hike leads to a 16th-century castle. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

For a multi-day tour, “Le versant nord de l’Aigoual” is another option: the hike starts in Meyrueis and takes two days and 36 kilometres to reach the summit of Mont Aigoual at 1,565 metres. Its two-day duration and 36-kilometre distance make it a multi-day trip in its own right. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Climbing and Visitor Information

The Pauparelle climbing practice area is directly above Meyrueis. As access and equipment requirements may change, get up-to-date information from the Bureau d'information touristique de Meyrueis or consult a current climbing guidebook. The Bureau provides visitor information in several languages, particularly in three languages, and is classified as a Category 1 tourist office. As the languages offered and classification may change, check the Bureau’s current information if needed.

Foire de la Saint-Michel

The Foire de la Saint-Michel takes place on the last weekends of September in Meyrueis and showcases local products. The two-day food-focused fair gives the event a culinary emphasis. If you would like to plan your trip around the Foire, check the dates for the relevant year, as they may change.
