Saint-Alban-Sur-Limagnole: Pilgrim’s Way, Nature and Heritage
Accommodation in Saint-Alban-Sur-Limagnole
Saint-Alban-Sur-Limagnole brings together trails, architectural history and regional culture. The GR65, the Chemin de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, crosses the commune from north to south. There is also a historical walking trail, a path to the Cascade du Franquet and mountain bike routes with different destinations. When planning your stay, consider whether you would like to focus on walking time, historic buildings or an excursion into the countryside.
On foot: historic stops and a waterfall
The Historical Trail of Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole is a very easy circular walk with eleven historical stops. It takes one hour and has 58 metres of ascent. This gives you a clear time frame for a route that combines history and walking. The GR65 offers a different point of reference: the Pilgrim’s Way crosses the commune from north to south.
A marked trail behind the hospital leads to the Cascade du Franquet and can be used on foot or by mountain bike. The waterfall is fed by the River Limagnole. The trails therefore differ in focus: on the Historical Trail, you follow the stops, while the marked trail leads to the Cascade.
Church, château and regional history
The parish church of Saint-Alban was listed as a historic monument by decree on 19 November 1985. Its choir is the oldest part; the apse is covered by a semi-dome vault. The church also has a two-storey bell gable with arcades. These features offer specific clues for taking a closer look at the church’s architecture.
The Château de Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole is mentioned as early as the 12th century, was rebuilt in the 15th century and became a psychiatric clinic in 1821. The Renaissance château houses the tourist office. Its beautiful courtyard hosts temporary exhibitions and events.
The Scénovision de St Alban takes you on a 40-minute journey through time to discover the history of the Margeride. This gives you two different ways to learn about history: a journey through time focused on the region, and a one-hour walking trail with its eleven historical stops.
