Remoulins: Trails, the Gardon and Heritage
Accommodation in Remoulins
Remoulins offers several starting points when planning a stay: trails through the garrigue and along the Gardon, historic buildings and seasonal events. You can first decide whether your visit will focus on a hike, the town’s architectural history or a seasonal event.
Trails along the Gardon and a seasonal bathing area
The “Entre Gardon et Vigières” trail connects Remoulins’ old town with the banks of the Gardon. The route passes through lanes, gardens and shaded paths. Yellow markings and signposts guide you along the way; if conditions change, it is advisable to check the markings on site. Other hiking trails in Remoulins also lead through the garrigue and along the banks of the Gardon.
The Baignade Ă Remoulins bathing area is near the town centre and offers a view of the Pont Neuf. An entry updated in 2024 lists seasonal opening from 1 April to 30 September and free access. As conditions may change, check the details before your visit.
Two trails with different points of interest
For a route that combines lanes, gardens and riverbanks, choose “Entre Gardon et Vigières”. Another option is the “Autour du Pont du Gard” circular hike. It starts at the Place de la Madone car park in Remoulins, is 8.7 kilometres long, includes 234 metres of elevation gain and takes three hours. Along the way, it passes remains of the Roman aqueduct and offers a panorama of the Pont du Gard. This gives you a choice between a route linking the old town and river, and a circular hike with a specified distance, elevation gain and duration.
Architectural history in Remoulins
The organ in Remoulins is considered one of the few surviving examples of Moitessier organ building. The organ’s instrumental section is protected as an object. Notre-Dame de Bethléem has a comb-style bell tower and is listed in the inventory of historic monuments. The former church dates from the 12th century and served successively as the town hall, a justice of the peace court, a prison and a school during the 19th century. It therefore illustrates both the building’s ecclesiastical origins and its later public uses.
The Donjon of Remoulins is a tower typical of the 12th century, with bossage masonry, and the only surviving remnant of the former castle of the Lords of Uzès. The Tour des Escaravats also dates from the 12th century; “Escaravats” means “beetles” in Provençal. The former fortified Porte de Remoulins is six metres high. Together, these buildings illustrate the different forms and functions of the town’s medieval history.
The remains of Remoulins’ old suspension bridge are part of the history of the river crossing. The bridge, designed by brothers Marc and Camille Seguin and one of the first suspension bridges in France, was completed in May 1830 and dismantled in 1937. It is listed as a historic monument. From the site of the old bridge, both banks offer a panoramic view of the Gardon.
Seasonal events and local traditions
The town’s 2025 welcome booklet describes summer food truck evenings from mid-June to the end of August, held on Tuesdays in the square in front of the town hall. For the night markets, it lists Monday evenings from mid-July to mid-August, when local producers and creative craftspeople come together. Dates and format may vary from year to year.
For 2025, the booklet places the Fête votive on the third weekend of July; the annual dates may change. Traditions include encierro, bandido and abrivado events in the town’s streets. A fair and a shared meal with local restaurateurs are also part of the celebrations. When planning, it is therefore important to distinguish between the seasonal periods described and the specific dates for each year.
