Discover Fressac: Château, history and landscapes
Accommodation in Fressac
In Fressac, the history of the Château de Fressac and La Maison des Synode sits alongside trails through holm oak woodland, vineyards and meadows. The different themes can help you shape your stay around heritage, landscapes or a specific activity.
Château and Protestant history
The ruins of the Château de Fressac, including the enclosing walls, were listed as a historic monument by decree on 23 September 1992. The surviving structure includes a three-storey keep, which may date back to the early 13th century. The dates have different roles here: 1992 is the date of the decree, while the keep’s dating is explicitly tentative.
La Maison des Synode is another historical landmark in Fressac. In August 1715, a religious assembly was held there, ushering in the return of Protestant worship in France. Antoine Court also convened the first synod of the Désert movement in the house, laying the foundations for the reorganisation of underground Protestantism. The house is now occupied and is not open to visitors. A large marble commemorative plaque is displayed on the façade.
Trail to the Château and the landscape
The trail to the Château de Fressac starts at the Les Montèzes trailhead and climbs through a stand of holm oaks. On the plateau, the route joins a path through vineyards. The plateau is bordered by meadows rich in orchids, which bloom in May. The trail description thus links the climb through the oak woodland with the landscape features of the plateau.
From the Château, the view extends to the edge of the Languedoc plain and the beginning of the Cévennes mountains. The descent to Fressac follows a steep path with steps. The trail to the château also crosses the route of the GR 63. These are different features of the same hiking area: views from the Château, a stepped descent to Fressac and a crossing with a waymarked long-distance trail.
Cycling route, canyoning and other places
Fressac can also be included in a cycling route: the L'Echappée Cévenole loop passes through the village and links garrigue, vineyards and chestnut groves. Another activity is guided canyoning with Pierre & Eau. The trips are led by state-certified guides and cater to different levels. This gives you several options to consider when planning your trip: a described cycling loop, the trail to the Château and a guided canyoning experience.
Other notable places include a hydraulic mill on the eastern bank of Fressac and the Dolmen de la Lèque. The mill has a large holding pond. The course of the béals and the water intake are visible; the site is next to a private home. The Dolmen de la Lèque is on private property. This information is useful when weighing up different cultural and landscape attractions for your stay.
