Revens: Causse Noir, Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Revens
Revens is a small village typical of the Causse Noir. From Revens, the view extends west across the Dourbie Valley and southwest towards the Trévezel Gorges. These directions offer different points of reference in the landscape. Revens is part of the Natura 2000 bird protection area “Gorges de la Dourbie et causses avoisinants”; the standard data form updated on 16 January 2025 lists the municipality among the communities in the area.
Landscape and nature
The Sentier du Bout du Causse offers another perspective on the Causse Noir. It passes through pastureland with hedgerows, offers open views of the Aigoual and conveys the history of the Causse Noir. Other characteristic landscape features include grasses known as “cheveux d’anges” (“angel hair”). Pastures where bison are kept may be visible along the trail.
Hiking trails in Revens
The Sentier de Revens is a 14-kilometre circular trail that takes six hours. These two details give you a specific timeframe for planning a hike. The trail passes through several hamlets in Revens and offers the chance to discover the typical architecture of the Causse. It is marked in yellow and rated difficult for mountain bikes. Since route conditions and markings can change, check both before planning to use the trail.
The trails offer different highlights: the Sentier du Bout du Causse showcases pastureland, hedgerows and views of the Aigoual; the Sentier de Revens passes through several hamlets and focuses on the architecture of the Causse. When planning, you can weigh up landscape experiences against a circular trail with a cultural connection.
The “De Revens à Montredon” stage begins in the centre of Revens and ends in the hamlet of Montredon. Before reaching Montredon, it follows the GR 71D along the Corniches de la Dourbie. The distinction is clear when choosing a route: the Sentier de Revens is described as a circular trail with a stated duration, while the stage runs from the village centre via the Corniches and the GR 71D to the hamlet of Montredon.
Local history and orientation
Construction of the Church of Saint-Pierre de Revens dates back to the early 19th century; its bell tower was completed in 1889. Saint-Pierre de Revens replaced an older Church of Saint-Pierre, now known as the Ermitage de Saint-Pierre. The names thus distinguish the later church building from its predecessor.
The Menhir de Revens offers a different historical perspective. Wind, frost and rain have weathered the stone, and its erosion continues day by day. Unlike the church’s datable construction history, the menhir highlights the ongoing effects of the weather.
Revens has a picnic area and parking. These are practical points of reference in the village, alongside the hiking trails, the landscape of the Causse Noir and the local historical sites.
