Notre-Dame-De-La-Rouvière sits on a small rocky promontory above the river, at the immediate foothills of the granite Mont Liron. The village, landscape and trails tell different stories of the Cévennes: the sunny Puech Sigal viewpoint offers an impressive view over the upper Hérault Valley. There are also old herding paths, a menhir at a crossroads and hikes described in very different ways.

Landscape and the history of the trails

The Pont Moutonnier at Col de l'Asclier lies on a traditional transhumance route to the high pastures of Aigoual and Mont Lozère. It was built specifically to allow herds to cross a difficult passage. The bridge is therefore not just a structure along the route, but part of the traditional connection between the grazing areas.

The Menhir du col du Bès is also part of a network of named trails: it stands at the crossroads of paths from Saint-Martial, La Tribale, Col de l'Asclier and Mont Liron. Exploring the local landscape brings you to a range of landmarks—from the rocky promontory above the river to the routes that follow prominent passes and heights.

At the Canyon des Tines, sculpted granite and potholes are as much part of the canyoning profile as small abseils, jumps and slides. These sculpted rock formations are another facet of the landscape, alongside its viewpoints and historic trail markers.

Hiking around Col de Bès and Taleyrac

The Sentier du col de Bès is an 11.3-kilometre circular hike starting in Notre-Dame-de-La-Rouvière. The stated duration is about three hours and 30 minutes; the route description also lists yellow trail markings and 661 metres of elevation gain. The tourism listing was last changed on 19 October 2023. Check the route details again before planning your hike.

The Sentier de Taleyrac is described differently: it goes over Col de l'Elze and then descends to Taleyrac along an old calade path carved into the rock. While the Sentier du col de Bès focuses on a circular route starting in the village and gives its duration and elevation figures, the Sentier de Taleyrac is defined by its descent along the historic rock path. Its description was updated on 17 June 2026.

Cultural and culinary experiences

La Filature du Mazel is a place for artistic creation, collaboration among associations, dialogue between art and research, and the development of public reading. It brings together artistic and community themes in one place. The programme may change; check the current offering before planning a visit.

The Taleyrac Valley is home to a designated emblematic production area for Oignon Doux des Cévennes. Terroir Envie welcomes visitors to a typical Cévennes hamlet and introduces them to terrace farming. This is followed by a cooking workshop, where a recipe is prepared using local produce and then shared over a meal. The tourism listing for these activities was last updated in March 2026.

Another experience described in the listing is a hiking bivouac with suspended tents in the heart of the Cévennes, combined with a gastronomic discovery and a tasting of dishes made from local produce. These offer different focuses: the cultural landscape and its trails, a cooking workshop with a shared meal, or a bivouac paired with regional cuisine. When planning your stay, these themes can help you decide which aspects of the area interest you most.
