Port-La-Nouvelle: Beaches, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Port-La-Nouvelle
Port-La-Nouvelle offers a range of options to consider when planning your trip: beaches, nature trails, cycling routes and a cultural programme. When choosing your destination, you can think about which of these aspects interests you most. For example, the beaches vary in length and character; on Sainte-Lucie, trails lead to viewpoints overlooking the canal and lagoons.
Beaches and Water Activities
The urban Front de Mer beach stretches for 1 kilometre. Tiralos and several accessible entry points for people with reduced mobility are available there. If you plan to use these facilities, check the current access arrangements before your visit. Les Montilles beach lies in the south of the commune and stretches for 3.5 kilometres. The two beaches therefore offer different lengths to help guide your choice.
At La Vieille Nouvelle beach, which has been made pedestrian-only, there is a car park with 150 spaces. These include longer spaces for cars with trailers used for kitesurfing. Kitesurfing conditions may vary by season; check the relevant information before your trip. Swimming, water sports and walking are among the activities available at the wild Vieille-Nouvelle beach.
Nature Trails and Cycling
The Réserve naturelle régionale de Sainte-Lucie is located within the commune of Port-La-Nouvelle and is protected by the Conservatoire du littoral. On Sainte-Lucie island, a walking trail runs through pine forests and garrigue to viewpoints. From there, you can look out over the Canal de la Robine and the Bages-Sigean and Ayrolle lagoons. The trail thus combines a variety of landscapes with clearly identified destinations along the route.
The towpath along the Canal de la Robine between Port-La-Nouvelle and Narbonne has been converted into a cycle path. Guided nature excursions by bicycle or mountain bike are also offered around Port-La-Nouvelle, for example along the Canal de la Robine. They last half a day or a full day. The availability of a specific tour may vary; check before making your plans. A rail connection links Narbonne station with Port-la-Nouvelle station. It is worth checking the timetable before your journey.
A family hike can also be planned based on its approximate duration and distance: it takes about three hours and covers around 8 to 10 kilometres. These details apply to the family hike, not to other excursions.
Culture, History and Local Traditions
The Pôle Culturel presents exhibitions throughout the year. Mardis Cinéma offers a monthly programme of films in their original language at the Théâtre de la Mer; the programme may change. Check which screening is scheduled before your visit. Cafés littéraires are opportunities to discuss books with library staff and invited guests. The La Nouvelle Photographie festival is dedicated to contemporary photography. Every summer, Partir en Livre brings together readings, workshops and events focused on children’s and young adult literature.
The region’s transport history is also part of its local heritage: the Tramway des Corbières once connected villages in the Aude and carried both passengers and goods. Some surviving stations and commemorative plaques still recall this shared history. The former saltworks of Sainte-Lucie consisted of ponds, dikes and channels used for salt production. A small community of salt workers once lived there.
Another local tradition is pêche à la traîne. The catch is raffled among the participants, followed by a sardinade. When the fishing method is explained, a fisherman demonstrates how it works on the beach using a replica of the net. The tradition and demonstration are seasonal; check the dates before your visit.
