Château: architectural history and design
The Château of Payra-Sur-L'hers is a residence dating from the 16th century. It appears to have been built before the Wars of Religion of 1562 to 1595, under Raymond de Marion, a general tax farmer for the queen who had grown wealthy through the pastel trade. The floor plan is almost square. A small square tower stands to the east, and an échauguette is located near the northwestern corner. A detached round tower was later used as a dovecote. The shape and position of the towers provide different points of reference: the small tower is to the east, the échauguette is near the northwestern corner, and the round tower stands alone.
Church and medieval connections
In 1119, the Église de la Sainte Vierge belonged to Alet Abbey; it preserves a Romanesque portal from the 12th century. When considering its later heritage protection, it is important to distinguish between the portal and the church: the portal was classified as a Monument historique on November 22, 1932. The church, excluding the classified portal, was listed as a Monument historique on February 2, 1988. The two dates therefore refer to different parts and protection categories. Together with the medieval connection to Alet, they offer several historical layers that can be considered separately when exploring the area’s history.
The Motte de Pech de Nadieu
About 500 meters from the village, the Motte de Pech de Nadieu sits on an oak-covered spur of land. Two small streams meet at its foot. The square earthen mound measures approximately 16 meters on each side and is about 2 meters high. A ditch about 13 meters wide and 5 meters deep surrounds it. The measurements help bring its shape into focus: the ditch is almost as wide as one side of the mound and considerably deeper than the mound is high. This makes it possible to understand the motte as a historic site in its own right, alongside the village’s buildings.
Walking routes and local produce
The Les Chemins Retrouvés association offers eight walking routes in Payra-Sur-L'hers for discovering the commune’s landscapes. Two of these routes were added to the PDIPR, the departmental plan for walking and hiking trails, in 2024 and marked with the required yellow waymarkers. Check the current status of these two routes before setting out.
