Palaja lies at the first foothills of the Corbières and combines landscapes with a layered local history. Its historic buildings include the Tour de Cazaban, the Church of Saint-Étienne, the Prieuré de Saint Foulc, the Oratoire de la Vierge and Les Arcades. If you are weighing up a destination based on its landscapes, outdoor activities and heritage, Palaja offers specific points of interest in all three areas.

Landscapes and outdoor activities

The landscape includes garrigue vegetation, pine and holm oak forests, and rocky slopes. The immediate surroundings offer opportunities for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. These activities differ in how you get around: on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike. This lets you take both the landscape and different outdoor interests into account when planning your trip.

Buildings and their history

The Tour de Cazaban is a square tower whose upper part was converted into a dovecote. An entry dated 24 April 1953 protects the tower as a Monument historique. The Church of Saint-Étienne also has a long history: it stands on the site of an original Church of Saint-Étienne. Its Notre-Dame altar was consecrated in 917 by Bishop Gimer. The present church was built in the first half of the 14th century during the episcopate of Pierre de Rochefort. The year 917 therefore refers to the altar of the earlier church, not to the building that stands today. Saint-Étienne is a fortified Gothic building with loopholes and has been listed in the supplementary inventory of Monuments historiques since 1961. The status designations differ: the tower is protected as a Monument historique; Saint-Étienne is listed in the supplementary inventory of Monuments historiques.

Paths and other places

A hiking trail is about seven kilometres long and offers several variations depending on the time available and your physical condition. It is intended exclusively for pedestrians, horse riders and mountain bikers; motor vehicles are prohibited. As local route details may change, check the current route and applicable usage rules before setting out.

The origins of the Prieuré de Saint Foulc date back to the beginning of the 11th century. In chronological terms, this beginning came after the consecration of the altar in 917 and before the construction of the present church in the 14th century. The site of the Prieuré has a car park, a rest area, a footpath and an information board. These visitor facilities were installed in 2017; check before visiting whether they are still in place.

Les Arcades is a former aqueduct that supplied water to the castle. The site is also a walking destination used by many Palaja residents. Its former role in supplying water and its use as a place for walks coexist here.

The Oratoire de la Vierge is an old chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary. For several years, the association Les Amis du Vieux Palaja has organised a procession there on 15 August. If you would like to coincide your visit with this date, check in advance whether the procession is planned for the year in question.
