Discover Limousis
Accommodation in Limousis
Discover Limousis through its different attractions: the prehistoric cave combines a guided tour with archaeological traces, while several hiking trails each have their own focus. For planning your stay, the duration information and the differences between a short loop, a challenging hike, and a viewpoint are especially helpful. Winegrowing is also part of the area’s character.
Grotte de Limousis: Guided tour and prehistoric traces
The Grotte de Limousis can only be visited on a guided tour, which lasts one hour. The route is more than a kilometer long and passes through seven chambers to reach two lakes. The guided tour therefore defines the format of the cave visit and distinguishes it from the hiking trails in Limousis.
The prehistoric traces in the cave include numerous remains of cave bears, tools, pottery, and Neolithic bones. There are also bear claw marks on the walls of the first chambers. The cave thus brings together different kinds of evidence: animal remains and marks on the walls alongside tools, pottery, and bones.
Another historical reference is the cave’s inclusion on the list of sites and natural monuments in 1947. This date is considerably later than the prehistoric traces and finds.
Hiking trails with different focuses
Le tour de la Grotte de Limousis is a very easy, one-kilometer loop that takes 20 minutes. It starts and ends at the lower cave parking lot. Themed panels cover geology, fauna, and flora, while a panoramic panel identifies the visible peaks. The loop thus combines a short walking time with information about nature and the views.
La Combe de la Balboune is a difficult hiking loop of 4.1 kilometers that takes two hours. The trail offers views of the four castles of Lastours: Cabaret, Tour Régine, Surdespine, and Quertinheux. It also follows a small road running alongside the vineyards of Limousis.
The Sentier du Bosc Grand starts and ends at the parking lot opposite the Limousis cemetery. It reaches the ridge of Mont Simel, where it offers views across the Aude Valley. Alongside the views of the castles on the Combe trail, this gives you a ridge and a panorama of the valley as specific landscape destinations to choose from.
For planning, you can compare three durations: 20 minutes for the cave loop, one hour for the guided tour, and two hours for the Combe hike. These durations correspond to different activities: a very easy loop, a cave visit available only as a guided tour, and a difficult hiking loop. This lets you weigh up the duration and type of outing together.
Winegrowing in Limousis
Limousis winegrowing is now part of the AOC Minervois. It also features in the landscape along La Combe de la Balboune: the small road running alongside the vineyards adds another specific view of the surrounding area to the views of the castles.
