La Chapelle-la-Reine is located in the Parc naturel régional du Gâtinais français and on the edge of the Forêt de Fontainebleau. Alongside its landscape, historical traces shape the town: medieval forms of its name, the church and a former royal road. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to La Chapelle-la-Reine, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.

The history of the town’s name and its church

A charter from 1125 mentions La Chapelle-la-Reine under the name Capella Réginae. Twenty-five years later, a charter records the form Capellan Gastinedi, meaning “La chapelle en Gâtinais” (“the chapel in the Gâtinais”). The two dates are close together, but introduce different historical names for the town; the second form explicitly refers to the Gâtinais.

The oldest part of the present-day church in La Chapelle-la-Reine is the Chapelle de la Vierge; based on its architecture, it is dated to the 13th century. The present-day sacristy of the Église Sainte-Geneviève also contains a Romanesque portal. In this way, architectural evidence complements the medieval names of the town: in addition to the charters, its history includes both a dated oldest section of the church and a Romanesque portal.

A former transport route

From the 17th century onwards, the royal road between Givet and Orléans ran through La Chapelle-la-Reine; it corresponds to today’s RD 152. For more than two centuries, the town had a horse post station. This station adds a connection to earlier travel to the town’s history and belongs to a later period than the 12th-century charters and the oldest part of the church, dated to the 13th century.

Local history in a book and on guided visits

Les Amis du Patrimoine published a book about the history of La Chapelle-la-Reine in 2015, covering the period from prehistory to the 20th century. You can consult it free of charge at the municipal library or buy it for 27 euros. The book’s scope therefore reaches far back beyond the medieval names recorded in the charters and extends to the 20th century.

In the area around La Chapelle-la-Reine, the Les Amis du Patrimoine association organizes two visits each year. One is a full-day guided tour focusing on the heritage and history of a neighboring village or town. The second event is held jointly with the Amis de la Forêt de Fontainebleau: a guided visit to a site is followed by an interpretive walk in the forest. This second event is open to members of both associations. Check the specific dates and participation requirements before your trip.

The market and practical information

The La Chapelle-la-Reine market offers food, clothing, haberdashery items and knick-knacks or small decorative objects. The product range may change over time. Parking options for the market include Rue Carnot and the square known as “des maronniers,” at the corner of Rue Général De Gaulle and Rue des Champs. Check the current parking situation before your visit.
