Bois-Le-Roi combines the Seine’s riverside landscape with the Fontainebleau Forest and opportunities for recreation and culture. When choosing a hotel, it may help to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: Would you like to explore routes through the town, plan a bike ride, or visit the town’s leisure and cultural sites? The local features offer practical guidance for your decision.

The Seine, forest and leisure landscape

Bois-Le-Roi lies north of the Fontainebleau Forest and borders the Seine to the east. The leisure and recreation area has its own north-south orientation: it is bounded by the Seine and its towpath to the south, and by the Fontainebleau Forest to the north. This brings together the town’s east-west orientation and the north-south boundaries of the leisure area.

Routes through the town

The 14.1-kilometre “Sentier de la biodiversité” runs through the entire town, providing access to the banks of the Seine, the Forêt des Viarons and the Base de Loisirs. Opened in October 2023, the trail offers opportunities to encounter local wildlife and plant life; nature observations vary with the seasons. If you plan to use the trail, check the route details before setting out.

Cycling options and activities

The two cycling options differ in their aims. The “Circuit cyclo touristique de Bois-le-Roi” starts at the Scandibérique or the SNCF railway station and is designed for discovering the town. A guided bike tour starts at the station, follows the Seine and visits the villas known as “les Affolantes.” One option is therefore focused on discovering Bois-Le-Roi itself, while the other follows a Seine route with a specific villa destination. Golf, tennis, horseback riding and urban sliding are also available at the Île de Loisirs de Bois-le-Roi. You can plan which activities to include based on these different focuses; check what is currently on offer in advance, as individual activities and their availability may change.

Getting there and connections to the leisure area

You can reach Bois-Le-Roi from Paris Gare de Lyon on Transilien line R in about 40 minutes. A free shuttle connects Bois-le-Roi station with the Île de Loisirs, making the water sports centre accessible. The shuttle’s service may be seasonal or subject to change, so check the connection when planning your trip. The two connections serve different purposes in your planning: the approximate travel time describes the journey from Paris, while the shuttle covers the route from the station to the leisure area.

Église Saint-Pierre: architecture and history

The Église Saint-Pierre de Bois-le-Roi is an architectural landmark. The building features three naves, pointed arches, 13th-century water-leaf capitals and a square bell tower from a transitional period. The church was almost entirely rebuilt around 1840. The three naves define the layout of the church interior; the arches and capitals identify further specific forms, while the bell tower stands out for its square plan. Those interested in architectural history will find a distinct cultural focus here, alongside the landscape and leisure activities.
