Macinaggio: Coastal Trail, Beach and Port
Accommodation in Macinaggio
Macinaggio offers several starting points for planning your stay: a long coastal trail, Tamarone Beach, maritime activities and regional products. If you’re looking for a hotel in Macinaggio, these themes can help you choose what to explore based on your own plans. Options range from hiking, excursions and water sports to market visits and insights into local history.
Coastal Trail and Beach
The Sentier des Douaniers is a 19-kilometre coastal walk between Macinaggio and Centuri. A separate duration is given for a shorter section: the route between Macinaggio and Barcaggio takes around three to three and a half hours. This duration applies to the section to Barcaggio, not to the entire walk to Centuri. The Sentier des Douaniers starts in Macinaggio at the beach north of the marina.
Tamarone can also be reached on foot from Macinaggio via the Sentier des Douaniers. The beach is sandy and lies at the entrance to a protected natural area. This destination therefore offers two specific features: access on foot via the coastal trail and its location beside the protected natural area. If you include Tamarone in your day’s plans, you can combine a beach visit with a section of the walking trail.
Port and Water Activities
The port of Macinaggio is located in the Parc Naturel Marin du Cap Corse et de l’Agriate. Capi Corsu Diving is listed at the Macinaggio marina. The provider’s activities relate to Cap Corse and include wreck and dive-site dives, as well as introductory dives. The offer also includes diving courses, CMAS and Cedip certifications, and PADI crossovers. As diving activities can be seasonal, check availability and the certifications offered before booking.
The Club Nautique de Macinaggio offers courses in the Hobie Cat 16, T1 catamaran and Optimist. Sea kayaks, windsurf boards, Hobie Cats, T1 catamarans, shared tenders and paddleboards are available to rent. Courses and rentals are listed as available from May to October; check the current season and availability before your trip. This distinguishes the courses from the various rental options without combining the different equipment into a single offering.
San Paulu offers guided excursions from Macinaggio to the Finocchiarola Islands Nature Reserve. Excursions from Macinaggio to the island of Capraia, described as part of a Tuscan national park, are also available. Check dates and operating periods before planning. Here, too, it’s helpful to distinguish between the options: the Finocchiarola Islands excursions are guided trips to a nature reserve, while Capraia is another listed destination.
Regional Products and Wine
At the fish market in Macinaghju, fishermen sell their catch in the late morning. Opening hours and selection may vary. The Macinaggio-Rogliano market offers a different focus, with regional products. It is scheduled for the first and third Friday of each month from May to September. Check the specific dates in advance if you’d like to include a market visit in your travel plans.
At Domaine Terra di Catoni in Macinaggio, the estate’s own wine and olive oil are sold alongside products from other local producers. Tastings are also available. Visitors can book a 4x4 tour through the vineyards and wine cellar by reservation. Sales, tastings and the tour, which requires a reservation, are different ways to explore the produce and the winery.
Traces of the Tour de Macinaggio
No physical remains of the Tour de Macinaggio survive today. The only known trace is a painting in the Church of Saint Marc de Macinaggio. The tower is believed to have stood at the mouth of the Goielli stream, in the southern part of today’s port. The history of the place thus brings together a presumed location and a surviving image as traces; each tells a different story of the former Tour.
