Discover Meung-Sur-Loire
Accommodation in Meung-Sur-Loire
Meung-Sur-Loire can be explored through several themes: a former episcopal residence, distinctive buildings, a museum devoted to local history, and a designated walking trail. The Sunday market and the railway station on the Orléans–Tours TER line also provide practical points of reference for planning your visit.
Château and historic buildings
The Château de Meung-sur-Loire preserves two distinct appearances: that of a fortified palace and that of an elegant 18th-century residence. From the Middle Ages until the French Revolution, it served as a prestigious residence for the bishops of Orléans. The château thus combines a long historical role with two clearly distinct architectural aspects.
Another testament to the town’s history is the Porte d’Amont. It is the only surviving monumental remnant of Meung-Sur-Loire’s former fortifications. Under a decree dated October 6, 1925, it was added to the supplementary list of historic monuments. Together with the château, it offers another starting point for exploring the history of the town.
Church, market, and museum
The Collégiale Saint-Liphard is a Romanesque abbey church with a cloverleaf ground plan, considered unique in the region. The shape of the plan is a specific architectural feature that can be used to describe the church. It has been classified as a historic monument since 1840. If you are interested in architecture, it complements the secular buildings with a different example of historic architecture.
A picturesque market is held every Sunday on Place du Martroi. If your stay falls on a Sunday, you can include it in your plans. The market gives the square a recurring weekly rhythm and provides another point of interest during your visit, alongside the historic buildings.
The Musée La Monnaye displays collections assembled by François Quatrehomme that trace the history of the local area. The museum is also devoted to the poet Gaston Couté, a native of the town, and presents his socially committed work. Two different perspectives thus come together: the history of the local area and the work of a poet connected with the town. The museum is a suitable stop if you would like to explore your stay not only through its buildings, but also through local history and literature.
Plan a walk and your journey
The Promenade des Mauves et des moulins is an easy, 10-kilometer walking trail that takes 2 hours and 15 minutes. Its length, difficulty level, and estimated time give you specific criteria for deciding whether the route fits your travel plans. You can plan a walk as a distinct part of your stay and weigh it against a focus on historic sites or the museum.
Meung-Sur-Loire has a railway station on the Orléans–Tours TER line. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel dates. When choosing where to stay, you can take the train connection and the topics that interest you locally into account together.
