Beaugency: Loire Landscapes and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Beaugency
Beaugency combines Loire landscapes with buildings and cultural sites from different eras. When planning your trip, you can focus on Romanesque architecture and medieval history, or include nature and seasonal activities. The themes range from historic buildings to a four-kilometre discovery trail in the surrounding area.
Architecture and History
Several architectural periods come together at Château de Beaugency. These include the 13th-century Saint-Georges Chapel and numerous 16th-century doors with their original Carvet mouldings. Original stained-glass windows have been reconstructed in the listed part of the building. The château’s features also include 15th-century roof timbers and a Renaissance façade.
Tour César is a square keep, now about 36 metres high, and one of the last surviving examples of Romanesque military architecture. The Abbey Church of Notre-Dame also features Romanesque architecture. These two buildings allow you to compare religious and military architecture. The Bridge of Beaugency dates from the 12th century and is more than 400 metres long.
Loire Landscapes and Nature
The Rives de Beaugency, in the surrounding area, are designated as a Natura 2000 site. They include the SAC FR2400528 “Vallée de la Loire de Tavers à Belleville-sur-Loire”, the SAC FR2400565 “Vallée de la Loire de Mosnes à Tavers”, the SPA FR2410001 “Vallée de la Loire du Loir-et-Cher” and the SPA FR2410017 “Vallée de la Loire du Loiret”. Since 2019, the Rives have also been designated an Espace naturel sensible by the Loiret Department.
European beavers have lived at the Rives de Beaugency since the 1980s. Common terns and little terns nest on the islands opposite the Bridge of Beaugency. The natural site is accessible via a four-kilometre public discovery trail that crosses the Loire bridge. One kilometre of the trail is a loop within the natural area. Both distances are useful when planning your time: four kilometres for the trail overall and one kilometre for the loop within the site.
Culture and Activities
Château de Lumières at Château de Beaugency combines historical heritage, digital art and emotional impressions in an immersive cultural experience. It features permanent immersive exhibitions as well as installed light and digital experiences. Exhibition content may change. The Church of Saint-Étienne, an 11th-century Romanesque building, now serves as an exhibition venue.
The Labyrinthe de Beaugency is laid out in a four-hectare maize field, where visitors solve puzzles as they make their way through it. As this is a seasonal attraction, check the dates before travelling. Canoeing on the Loire is another activity available in Beaugency.
La Loire à Vélo runs along the right bank of the Loire towards Beaugency. Conditions may vary along the route. Check them in advance if you plan to include the route in your itinerary. Beaugency SNCF railway station is an eight-minute walk from Château de Beaugency.
