Sury-Aux-Bois: Forest, Canal and Local History
Accommodation in Sury-Aux-Bois
Sury-Aux-Bois lies in the heart of the state-owned Forêt d’Orléans; at the same time, the Canal d’Orléans runs through the town. Nature and the history of the canal offer different highlights for a stay. The commune is part of the Natura 2000 network, and several ZNIEFF sites—natural areas of ecological, faunal and floristic interest—are located here. The landscape, outdoor activities and local history offer different starting points when choosing a destination based on its themes.
Forest, nature and hiking
The Canal et Brin d’Amour circular trail is a very easy hike lasting about 2 hours and 30 minutes. For planning your day, this approximate duration offers a concrete reference; allow around two and a half hours. In addition to this route, you can plan a walk through the forest or explore it on foot or by bike. The distinction is useful for planning: the hike comes with an approximate duration and difficulty level, while walking and exploring describe the broader opportunities in the forest. Sury-Aux-Bois is also near the Scandibérique cycling route. For cycle tourists, this proximity is a reference point in its own right, alongside the opportunities to explore the forest.
The Canal d’Orléans and its history
The Canal d’Orléans is not merely part of the landscape: Sury-Aux-Bois benefited from its opening at the end of the 17th century. On the Loire side, the Canal d’Orléans’s summit reach is located at Sury-Aux-Bois; the “Montagne” was built there. The summit reach and the Montagne make it possible to travel more than 18 kilometres without passing through a lock, between the Seine and the Loire, in the heart of the Carnutes forest. Two scales are therefore side by side: Sury-Aux-Bois historically benefited from the canal’s opening, while the lock-free section describes a longer connection between the Seine and the Loire.
Church, family history and tradition
The first recorded mention of Suriacus appears in a charter of King Lothair dated 956. This places the town’s history as far back as the 10th century. The Church of Saint-Georges offers another point of reference: it dates from the 15th century and was modified several times over the centuries. During the French Revolution, it was temporarily used as a salt store. Its history thus encompasses both changes over the centuries and a temporary use as a storehouse.
The Porte des seigneurs refers to thirteen noble landowning families who lived in Sury-Aux-Bois between 1600 and 1800. This focuses on a specific group and period, unlike the much earlier mention of Suriacus. The Saint-Georges well is also part of local tradition: it was reputedly believed to have powers to cure eye diseases. The heritage therefore encompasses both datable architectural and local history, and an attributed belief passed down through tradition.
