Sully-Sur-Loire brings together a castle on the banks of the Loire, a walled, wooded park, ecclesiastical heritage and activities on the river. To help choose a hotel, first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: castle history, scenery or a specific leisure activity.

Castle, Church and Cultural Landscape

The Château de Sully-sur-Loire was built on the banks of the Loire at the end of the 14th century. In 1928, it was listed as a medieval fortress. Its construction period and listed status give the château a clearly defined historical context. The landscape also extends beyond the town: the UNESCO-listed cultural landscape of the Val de Loire begins at Sully-sur-Loire and stretches 280 kilometres to Chalonnes.

Another historical landmark is the Église Saint-Ythier. It was originally located within the château’s former outer bailey and retains its historic organs and 18th-century furnishings. Alongside the history of the fortress, visitors can also discover church organs and historic furnishings.

During the Heures Historiques, the Château and its park provide the setting in mid-May for an event featuring historical costumes, a medieval market and numerous historical performances. If you plan to time your trip around it, check the exact event dates in advance. The museum offers both guided and self-guided visits for groups and individual visitors; check the arrangements in advance.

Parkland and Nature

The Parc du Château de Sully-sur-Loire is a wooded park enclosed by walls. A footbridge over the Sange leads to ponds home to numerous birds. The ponds are part of an outlying area of the Loire Natura 2000 site. Beyond the bridge, a 50-hectare natural area is also located at Espace Georges Blareau. The park thus combines the historic setting of the château with a landscape shaped by water, woodland and birdwatching.

Activities on the Water, on Foot and in the Park

Sully Canoë Kayak offers canoe, kayak and stand-up paddleboard trips on the Loire, with routes of 10, 20 or 30 kilometres. The options are therefore distinguished first by their stated route length. As water conditions and operating arrangements can change, check the latest conditions before setting out.

For an activity on foot, Le Château hanté de Sully-sur-Loire – Parcours à pied offers a puzzle trail. Follow the clues and access content on your smartphone at each stop. The trail takes about an hour.

Les attelages du Château offers seasonal carriage rides in July and August on weekends and public holidays, departing from the grounds of the Château. The rides follow wooded paths along the banks of the Sange to a replica of the Grotto of Lourdes and a botanical trail. Horse rides and pony rides are also offered in the park and in the town centre. The activities therefore differ both in format and timing: the carriage rides are seasonal and run on weekends and public holidays, while the horse and pony rides are offered in the park and town centre.

Flights with Montgolfières du Val de Sully offer another perspective. They take off near the Château de Sully-sur-Loire and provide 360-degree views over the Loire, the Sologne and the Forêt d’Orléans. Pottery classes are also available locally: L’Atelier Boutique de Valérie Rêve offers taster and introductory classes by appointment.

Museums, Cinema and Crafts

The L’Arcatène Helyett exhibition displays Helyett bicycles and motorcycles in the former factory, an emblematic part of Sully-sur-Loire. The museum offers bicycle hire, parking, a picnic area and food and drink on site. Check the visiting arrangements and availability of these services in advance.

Cinéma SULLY has a 200-seat auditorium and screens box-office hits, children’s and youth films, as well as arthouse films. For a visit focused on regional crafts, L’Atelier Boutique de Valérie Rêve also offers stoneware and porcelain tableware made near the workshop. Pottery classes are held by appointment; shopping and taking a class are two different ways to discover the workshop.

Comparing Two Cycling Routes

Two cycling routes of different lengths and in different directions are available. One route is 28 kilometres long, runs from Gien to Sully-sur-Loire and includes the Château du Duc de Sully. The second is 20 kilometres long and runs from Sully-sur-Loire to Châteauneuf-sur-Loire along the north bank, following the Guilly river meander. The distances and destinations help with comparing the routes; check the conditions and signage for each route before setting off.
