La Ferté-Saint-Aubin: Château, Local History and Nature
Accommodation in La Ferté-Saint-Aubin
La Ferté-Saint-Aubin offers several different ways to shape your stay: a private family château in a large park, historic buildings and memorial sites, as well as nature at Étang des Aisses. You can get to know the area according to your interests—through its architecture and local history, a walk by the pond, or leisure activities.
Château and Local History
Château de La Ferté-Saint-Aubin is a private family château that has been inhabited for 350 years. It is set in a 50-hectare park. The immersive tour includes more than 15 furnished rooms, offering a glimpse of the château’s furnished interiors. Tour formats may change; check the current offerings before your visit.
The other historic buildings also reflect different periods. Saint-Aubin Tower is a protected monument with pre-Romanesque origins dating back to the 11th century. Saint-Michel Church stands on the site of an older building erected in the 11th or 12th century. Its history therefore extends beyond the present church building. The Chapel of the Virgin in the north transept was built from the late 1660s through the 1670s and served as the château’s private chapel.
The Vieux quartier Saint-Michel is home to old Sologne houses clustered around the church. Their construction features both timber and wattle and daub, as well as timber and brick. Looking at the houses, you can see the variety of traditional construction methods in Sologne, with not all buildings following the same style.
The Bellefontaine Memorial honors members of the Resistance who were killed by German troops in the spring of 1944 in La Ferté-Saint-Aubin and neighboring communes. An official commemoration of the 1944 massacre is held every year in June.
Nature, a Visit to the Town and Leisure
At Étang des Aisses, a walking path around the pond winds through a natural, well-preserved setting. An observation tower offers panoramic views over the water. Interpretive panels offer an engaging way to learn about local fauna and flora. The focus here is on walking around the pond, observing nature and learning about it.
The Baludik walking trail “Les souvenirs perdus de La Ferté-Saint-Aubin” offers a different perspective on the town. This immersive quest takes you through its streets, heritage and landmarks. While the landscape frames the experience at Étang des Aisses, this trail turns the focus to the town’s heritage. The free “Visite de ville de La Ferté-Saint-Aubin” town tour is open daily from January 1 to December 31, 2026.
Le Cube is the aquatic and leisure center of the Communauté de Communes des Portes de Sologne. It welcomes visitors year-round for fitness, relaxation and family leisure. This year-round leisure offering complements the town’s historic and nature-focused attractions.
In the forest, Notre-Dame des Trays is a 19th-century oratory and a picturesque, peaceful place. It offers a quieter change of pace from town visits and leisure activities. You can weigh up which of these different aspects appeals most to you based on the specific places and activities.
Market and Getting There
The Thursday market brings together vendors selling organic and other fresh produce, meat, fish, cheese and honey. The products on offer may vary from vendor to vendor. If you plan to visit the market, Thursday is the day of the week to note.
