Montbazon brings together a castle complex classified as a historic monument, other buildings, digital cultural offerings and a designated hiking route. The places and activities differ not only in subject matter but also in the time they require.

Castle Complex and Historic Buildings

Montbazon’s castle complex was classified as a historic monument by decree on 15 May 2024. The remains of the keep are believed to date from around the year 1000. The Hôtel-Dieu was built around 1476 to provide pilgrims travelling to Santiago de Compostela with shelter and accommodation. The Porte des Moulins is the only surviving medieval town gate in Montbazon and was fortified in 1471. In the Ruelle des Anges, the path passes beneath a 16th-century half-timbered house and runs alongside the presbytery’s parish garden. These buildings offer different historical perspectives: from the possibly early keep to accommodation for pilgrims, and from medieval to later forms of urban architecture.

The Forteresse de Montbazon’s seasonal visitor programme includes a one-hour theatrical tour of the castle and its underground passages. The tour is led by a guide in period armour and ends with the firing of a siege engine. Programme details may vary by season, so check the current offering before your visit. With its clearly defined duration, the tour is easy to plan as a separate block of time; the seasonal schedule is an important factor when choosing a date.

Digital Culture and Art Exhibitions

The Micro-Folie in Montbazon is a free digital museum, open to everyone and designed for flexible use. On the second Sunday of each month, it presents a rotating selection of works and offers ongoing workshops. The organiser may adjust the programme, so if you are planning a visit for a particular date, it is worth checking the current offering.

At Parc de la Grange Rouge, the Maison des Arts et Découvertes holds around ten art exhibitions each year; the individual exhibitions vary. The two cultural venues also differ in their schedule: the Micro-Folie changes its selection of works monthly, while the Maison holds around ten exhibitions a year. Parc de la Grange Rouge also has wooded areas, as well as sports and cultural facilities.

Hiking Route and Outdoor Activities

Les Chemins de Montbazon is a circular route with six themed stages. It is about 12 kilometres long, or more precisely 12.5 kilometres; the hike is listed as taking approximately 3 hours and 30 minutes and having a moderate difficulty level. This makes it easy to distinguish the route in terms of time from the one-hour theatrical castle tour: it takes up a considerably larger part of the day and offers a different focus for your stay.

The waters of the Indre near Montbazon are also used for pike fishing. Together, the circular route, park and waterways offer different options for planning your trip, while the historic buildings and cultural attractions provide other focal points. When choosing a hotel, you can therefore consider whether you want to focus your stay primarily on history, exhibitions or a longer hike.
