Verzé: Romanesque Architecture and Geological History
Accommodation in Verzé
Verzé appeals to travellers who want to combine their stay with cultural history, geology or a walk through the Mâconnais landscape. The themes are clearly distinct: historical highlights include the Romanesque religious buildings in Verzé and Verchizeuil, as well as the Château-fort in Verzé; the Site géologique de Rampon explores geological eras; and the Le Mont de la Fâ hike offers views across the Val Lamartinien. You can choose the focus of your stay according to whether you would like to learn more about architectural history, geological history or wine-growing landscapes.
Churches and fortress: architectural history in Verzé
The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in the centre of Verzé is originally Romanesque. Its bell tower collapsed on 11 March 1721; in 1847, the church was rebuilt to plans by the architect Berthier. Its architectural history therefore includes both a Romanesque origin and a 19th-century reconstruction.
The Chapelle Saint-Criat in Verchizeuil is an 11th-century Romanesque chapel dedicated to Jesus Christ under the name Saint Criat. In the following century, it became the parish church of Saint-Marcellin. This building brings together an early date of construction and a later religious function, giving the chapel its own historical significance alongside the Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste.
The Château-fort in Verzé was built around 1340 by Simon de Sainte-Croix. Today, only the main building, the truncated round tower at the northeastern corner and the recessed east wing remain. The fortress adds another type of historic architecture to the religious buildings. Together, the three structures represent religious and fortified architecture from different historical periods.
Geological history at the Site géologique de Rampon
A discovery trail runs through the Site géologique de Rampon in Verzé and takes visitors on a journey through several million years of geological history. The visit takes about an hour and passes seven information panels with QR codes. The geological interpretation spans from the Carboniferous to the Cretaceous; the stated period covers approximately 360 to 65 million years ago. This takes you far beyond the construction periods of the historic buildings: at Rampon, the focus is not on a single structure but on a long chapter of geological history. The duration, information panels and QR codes provide a concise guide to this distinct part of your stay.
Hiking and wine country
The Le Mont de la Fâ hike starts in Verzé. From the Monts Chevreuil and de la Fâ, it offers views across the Val Lamartinien; it also leads through wine-growing landscapes and hamlets typical of the Mâconnais. It therefore complements Rampon with a focus on the landscape: there, the geological timespan takes centre stage, while the hike is about views across the valley and the surrounding area shaped by vineyards and hamlets.
Viticulture in Verzé is concentrated mainly along the long western slope, at an altitude of 280 to 410 metres. Mâcon-Verzé is a supplementary geographical designation within the regional Mâcon appellation in the Mâconnais. This connects the local wine-growing landscape with a clearly named regional designation of origin. Domaine de la Jobeline in Verzé welcomes curious and interested visitors. If you plan to visit, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.
