Sigy-Le-Châtel is classified as a rural, historic and natural site. Historic buildings, an audio tour in the church, cadoles in the area around Hautecour and a 59 km circular route offer different ways to plan your trip. Its architectural history spans from the first mention of the château in the 10th century to buildings from the late 18th century. This lets you decide whether to focus on individual buildings, the church’s audio experience or the landscape.

Historic buildings and their dates

The Château de Sigy-le-Châtel is one of the oldest castles in the Mâconnais; it was first mentioned in the 10th century. What remains includes sections of wall, the bases of two large round towers and the corner of a building with an échauguette, a small watchtower. The early mention and the surviving features offer two different perspectives on the château: its place in history and its clearly identifiable architectural remains.

Maison Monnier adds a further point of comparison: the manor house was probably built in 1795 and was listed as a historic monument by decree on 20 August 2009. Notable features include an open gallery with monolithic stone columns and a dovecote in the east tower. The probable construction date and the exact date of its listing represent different milestones in the house’s history.

In the hamlet of Hautecour, the Château de la Motte was built by the Thivolet family at the end of the 18th century. Hautecour is also home to an impressive barn belonging to the monks of Cluny. This extends the range beyond the Château de Sigy-le-Châtel and Maison Monnier: Hautecour adds another château and a building associated with the monks of Cluny.

Saint Nicolas Church and cultural events

The former church of the Saint Nicolas priory dates from the 12th century. The church also offers an audio tour in the form of an audio postcard. The building’s historical context and the listening experience thus offer two different ways to explore it.

The local association dedicated to preserving the church and heritage organizes concerts in the church, a flea market and walks to support its work. The association of the old Château de Sigy-le-Châtel has organized a theatre festival on the château grounds to bring the castle ruins into the spotlight. Check the specific event dates and information about the festival programme before travelling.

Nature around Sigy-Le-Châtel

Sigy-Le-Châtel is located within the ZNIEFF “Grosne et Guye”. The surrounding area includes floodplains along the Grosne and Guye, with adjoining slopes, as well as a small section of limestone plateaus at the confluence of the two rivers. It also features floodplain forests, waterways, hedgerows, fallow land and limestone woodland. This natural area therefore includes both water-influenced environments and slopes, hedgerows and limestone terrain.

Numerous cadoles have been recorded in the woods above the hamlet of Hautecour; they were formerly located in the vineyards. Comparing their woodland setting with their former vineyard context also highlights changes in how the landscape has been used.

Plan your circular route and journey

Sigy-Le-Châtel is a stop on a 59 km circular route starting in Salornay-sur-Guye. Sights along the route include the feudal château, the medieval ruins, Maison Monnier and the Romanesque church of the former Saint-Nicolas priory. Check the route details before setting off so your plans cover the entire circular route.

Sigy-Le-Châtel is also near Mobigo line TAD751. It connects Montceau-les-Mines with Cluny and offers pick-up at the “Mairie de Sailly” stop. The circular route and the bus line are separate travel options: check the route details for the tour, and the timetable and service information for the line, before travelling.
