Damerey: Saône, Forests and Heritage
Accommodation in Damerey
Damerey brings together landscapes and cultural heritage. The Saône runs along the western side of the village, while numerous forests line its eastern side. Other points of interest include the “Prairies alluviales,” the Sentier du Grand Pâquier, the Château de Bresse-et-Castille and the Church of Saint-Georges. If you are looking for a hotel in Damerey, you can plan your trip around your interests, whether nature, an easy walking route, fishing or architecture.
Landscape and walking route
Between Damerey and Verdun-sur-le-Doubs lie the “Prairies alluviales,” a Natura 2000 site with areas prone to flooding. Seasonal water supports diverse flora and fauna there. Water and seasonal conditions thus shape the character of the alluvial meadows. The Saône to the west, the forests to the east and the area between the two villages offer different landscape features to explore during your stay.
The Sentier du Grand Pâquier connects the village of Damerey with the banks of the Saône and passes through a wet meadow designated as a Natura 2000 site. The route is five kilometres long, is considered easy, and starts and ends in Damerey. Its length, difficulty level, start and finish provide practical details for planning a walk.
Architecture and history
The Château de Bresse-et-Castille is an example of Art Brut, inspired by the Bresse region and Spain. Roger Mercier began building it in 1984, and construction continues to the present day. Since 28 March 2017, the château has been listed as a historic monument. Its artistic classification, two sources of inspiration and construction history are among the defining aspects of this heritage site.
The apse and part of the nave walls are preserved from the Romanesque Church of Saint-Georges. The nave has a semicircular, wood-panelled roof structure. The straight chancel bay has a rib vault, while the apse has a half-dome vault. These forms correspond to their respective parts of the building: the nave, chancel bay and apse each have distinctive architectural features. The church’s profile thus includes both preserved Romanesque elements and different roof and vault forms.
The two buildings offer distinct architectural themes: the château is notable for its Art Brut classification and inspirations from the Bresse region and Spain, while Saint-Georges features preserved Romanesque elements and different construction forms. For a themed visit, you can choose between a work whose construction continues to the present day and a Romanesque church with specifically identified architectural features.
Leisure in Damerey
Fishing on the Cosne is one of Damerey’s popular leisure activities. It adds another specific activity to the village’s landscape and architecture themes. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of interests: an easy walking route, fishing or architectural heritage.
