When looking for a hotel in Le Breuil, you might also consider whether architecture, history or outdoor activities will shape your stay. The Église du Breuil and the château as it stands today represent different periods of construction; several marked walking trails pass through Le Breuil and its surroundings. Cycling routes and activities on the water offer further options.

Church, Château and Archaeological Traces

The Église du Breuil has a Bernardine layout, a flat-ended choir and rib vaults. These features describe different aspects of the church’s construction: its layout, the shape of the choir and the vaulting. The small bell tower also has its own details: it has twin windows and a stone spire. This makes it possible to consider the overall structure and individual architectural elements separately.

The church is one of the rural churches built in the second half of the 12th century and at the beginning of the 13th century in the vicinity of the great Cistercian abbeys of Burgundy and Franche-Comté. By contrast, the château as it stands today in Le Breuil dates from the 17th century and remains unfinished. These different construction periods give local history more than one point of reference: the church represents a medieval building phase, while the château belongs to a later era.

More than 300 Neolithic flints, flakes or tools were collected at Pointe des Bruyères. Their Neolithic classification points to a period much earlier than the construction history of the church and château. For those interested in cultural history, archaeological traces are another point of interest alongside the architecture.

Walking, Cycling and Water Activities

Les Sentiers du Breuil offers several marked walking trails on which you can discover Le Breuil and its surroundings. There is also a specific route description for Lac de Montaubry: a 15-kilometre trail runs around the lake. You can take the stated distance into account when planning your day’s route. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

At Parc du Morambeau, cyclists and mountain bikers are welcome on trails open to bicycles. If you want to go cycling, these are the designated trails. Lac de Montaubry covers 128 hectares, and there are also several shaded picnic tables. When planning, you can therefore take into account both the route around the lake and a break at the picnic tables.

The Ski Nautique Club Montaubry has offered water skiing at Montaubry since the early 1960s, for families, leisure and competition training. By prior arrangement, the club offers introductory water-skiing and wakeboarding sessions, as well as rides on towable inflatables. Equipment is provided for beginners. Arrange your visit in advance; bookings and operating hours may change.
