Barnay offers several points of interest for a stay: an 18th-century parish church, a circular cycling route that passes through the village, and the opportunity to visit a snail farm. If you are looking for a hotel in Barnay, consider which of these interests you would like to include in your travel plans. There is a specific time frame for the bike ride; arrange your visit to the snail farm in advance. The private status of some locations is also important when planning.

Church and architectural history

The Eglise Saint Bonnet is in Barnay Dessous and is an 18th-century parish church. It is built of dressed stone and comprises a nave, an apsidal choir and a large façade with a bell tower rising above it. Château de Vesvrotte differs both in function and period: it is a private residence dating from between the 17th and 18th centuries. Thus, two different types of building take centre stage: a parish church and a residence.

The Boucle d’Autun: route and direction

The Boucle d’Autun passes through Barnay and is a moderately difficult, 55.5-kilometre circular cycling route that takes six hours. These details give you a specific time frame for planning. The route is signposted exclusively in a counterclockwise direction; the red cycling signs are marked with the number 2. Check current route conditions before setting off, as signs or the route may change. The Boucle d’Autun lists Château de Barnay as one of its 31 heritage sites. This is a historic site, not a visitor attraction that is open today. Therefore, its inclusion on the route should not be taken to mean that visits to a château are offered.

Snail farm and products

L’Escargot Morvandiau offers the opportunity to visit a snail farm in Barnay. Check in advance whether a visit is possible on your chosen date. The snails are born, raised and prepared in Burgundy; they are sold frozen and in jars. The products carry the “Produits du Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan” label and the “Morvan Nature et Talents” signature. The visit and the range of products appeal to different interests: the visit is about the snail farm, while the product formats describe how the snails are sold.

Private places and traces of history

Étang du Moulin is private. A 1828 cadastral map records two mills below it, named “Le Moulin” and “Le Moulin de Roussillon”. Bear its private status in mind when planning an outing, rather than assuming the pond is open to the public. Barnay’s granite quarry is also private today; in addition, it is flooded. The details clearly distinguish the sites: for Étang du Moulin, the historical connection to the two mills sits alongside its private status; for the quarry, private ownership and flooding are part of its present condition.

Getting there: the former Gare de Barnay

The former Gare de Barnay was a stop on the Laroche-Migennes to Étang line via Avallon, Saulieu and Autun. The line is still in operation, but trains no longer stop at Barnay. Check current transport information before relying on a train connection to get there, and do not plan on a stop in Barnay itself.
