Moraches: Church, Croix de Mavé and limestone landscape
Accommodation in Moraches
Moraches between architectural history and landscape
Moraches is situated on the Départementale 5 between Corbigny and Brinon-sur-Beuvron. For travelers interested in historic buildings and the regional landscape, the village offers several perspectives: the Église Saint-Nazaire et Saint-Celse reflects the history of its construction and restoration, while the Croix de Mavé is a stone roadside monument in the village. This cultural and historical perspective is complemented by the Pelouses du Plateau du Beuvron, located near Brinon-sur-Beuvron and Moraches. This makes it possible to frame a stay around architecture, religious remembrance and landscape conservation.
Church and village cross
The Église Saint-Nazaire et Saint-Celse de Moraches was built in the early 16th century in the Flamboyant Gothic style and later restored. Wall paintings were uncovered and enhanced inside. The church has been listed as a Monument historique since 1926. Its construction date, style and protected status provide clear points of reference for understanding the building. The uncovered and enhanced wall paintings add another dimension to its architectural history, in the interior. Those interested in sacred architecture can consider both the period in which the building was constructed and how it was treated later.
The Croix de Mavé draws attention to the arrangement and inscription of a roadside monument. A cube-shaped stone block rests on a two-tier pyramidal stone base. At the top, the Croix bears a wrought-iron cross; at its center is a depiction of a head representing the Lord. Four stone posts surround the base, and a stone basin stands in front of the stele. The Croix bears the inscription “O Cross, protect our life, bless our death,” dated 1858. It expresses a plea for protection in life and blessing in death. The Croix stands at a crossroads in the center of the village of Moraches. The monument therefore allows the spatial arrangement of its stone elements and the meaning of its traditional wording to be considered separately.
Well and limestone landscape
The Puits de Mavé offers another perspective on the built heritage. The round stone well has a stone support for the lifting mechanism and a roof made from a single block of stone. The crank and drum are still there; a stone livestock trough stands beside them. A recess in the upper part of the well shaft is a notable feature. It was intended to allow women drawing water to avoid lifting a full bucket. At the well, the design of the lifting mechanism and the stated purpose of the recess can thus be considered side by side. The Puits is at a road junction at the entrance to the hamlet of Mavé, coming from the Départementale 5.
The Pelouses du Plateau du Beuvron near Brinon-sur-Beuvron and Moraches lie on a limestone plateau. The valleys of the Yonne, Beuvron and Armance rivers, along with numerous deeply incised dry valleys, cut clearly through it. The terrain thus combines plateau areas with pronounced valley cuts. The grasslands are of considerable conservation interest in connection with butterfly populations. The conservation concern is of lasting importance, while individual populations can vary seasonally and from year to year. The landscape and conservation interest offer another perspective, alongside the buildings, for understanding Moraches and its surroundings.
