Dornes offers two distinct areas of interest for planning a trip: historic buildings and trails through the rural landscape. The Saint-Julien Church, the Château de Dornes and the former market hall represent different building histories; hiking and cycling routes offer another perspective on the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel in Dornes, these themes can help you shape your trip around culture, outdoor activities or a mix of both.

Church, Château and architectural history

The Saint-Julien Church was built in the 12th and 16th centuries and has been listed as a Monument historique since 1926. Its protected furnishings include three high reliefs, a monument, a tombstone and several protected statues. The building phases and furnishings offer different points of reference if you are interested in the history of the church building.

The Château de Dornes was built in 1547 by Florimond Fouet de Dornes in the Renaissance style. Its architectural features include a loggia with three arches. Historically, the château is associated with Marshal Lannes; it also features painted interior decoration. It has been partially listed as a Monument historique since 10 April 1996. The protected ensemble includes the château, the moats, the outbuildings, a fixed bridge and the dovecote.

The covered market hall is also part of Dornes' architectural history. The architect Cristo built it in 1948 in the Art Deco style; it was later converted into an event hall. Dornes therefore brings together different architectural forms and phases of use, from the Renaissance Château to the converted market hall.

On foot and by bike

The Chemin de la Brigandiere follows rural paths through the bocage landscape of the Sologne bourbonnaise and along damp sunken lanes with old oak trees, wild flora and fauna. The circular walk starts and ends at the Étangs des Baillys. It is free of charge and has no set opening hours. The route “Des Lafonds en passant par Bellevue” offers another view of the landscape: from there, the view extends across the countryside.

The 553-kilometre, moderately difficult “Tour de la Nièvre à vélo” passes through Dornes. Numerous connecting options offer different route variations. This allows you to plan your route around the available connections; check route conditions before setting out.

Leisure spots and market

Les Bernardins has a children's playground, an outdoor fitness trail and a football pitch. A footbridge leads to a community-run orchard beside a pond with high biodiversity. Facilities may change, so check the latest information before your visit.

A tourism listing recorded about 1.2 years ago mentions the Fromagerie Berthier sales van at the Dornes market on Wednesday mornings; check again before your trip to see whether it will be there. The Fromagerie’s general range includes raw-milk cow’s-milk cheese, cream, butter, yogurt, fromage blanc, as well as raw milk and goat’s cheese.
