Oulon combines historic buildings with the Étang d'Oulon, an artificial pond with its own ecosystem. Both are part of the character of the place and offer different themes to focus on when planning your trip.

Building history and sacred architecture

The so-called “Vieux Château” is a former fortified house dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. A round tower is all that remains of the building. Its classification as a fortified house, its dating and the surviving tower offer distinct points of reference for understanding the building’s history.

Beneath the so-called “Vieux Château” is a barrel-vaulted cellar dating from the 16th century. The two dates refer to different parts of the structure: the house is attributed to the 12th and 13th centuries, and the cellar to the 16th century. A barrel vault is a curved, lengthwise vault. This makes it possible to place the cellar in time and identify it by its own architectural form.

The church of Saint-Andoche offers another way to explore Oulon’s architectural history. It is Romanesque and dates from the late 12th century. Its entrance portal has two round-arched archivolts and a sculpted tympanum. It depicts God the Father blessing the world, flanked by two angels in adoration. The portal thus combines a clearly defined arch form with a figurative image.

The church’s capitals are also decorated with sculptures. They sit atop columns and wall piers and depict mythical creatures, human figures and floral motifs. A capital is the top part of a column or pier. At Saint-Andoche, you can therefore consider the different human and plant motifs on these architectural elements alongside the imagery of the tympanum. The portal and capitals bring architectural forms together with sculpted details.

The Étang d'Oulon as a natural setting

The Étang d'Oulon adds another point of interest: the pond is artificial and has its own ecosystem. Its artificial construction describes how it came into being, while its ecosystem offers another aspect of this natural setting. The Étang is used for recreation and is popular with anglers. It complements the historic buildings with the opportunity to experience Oulon from the perspective of a stay by the water.

Visitors can also come to the banks of the Étang d'Oulon for lunch. If you plan to have lunch there, check the arrangements before your visit. This lets you take both the historic sights and the natural setting into account as different interests when planning your trip, rather than combining them into a single theme.

Oulon’s features offer several points of interest to help you plan. You can choose a focus based on your interests and then look for hotels for your stay in Oulon.
