Rézentières brings together natural landscapes, trails and heritage, offering a range of themes for a stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Rézentières, you can plan your trip around what interests you most: the regional landscape, a route on foot or by mountain bike, or the history of the Église Sainte-Madeleine.

The natural landscape of the Planèze

Rézentières is part of the Planèze de Saint-Flour Natura 2000 site. In the surrounding region, this area is a basalt plateau with extensive meadows, groups of pine trees and wetlands. Its inclusion places Rézentières within the wider landscape of the Planèze.

Birdlife is also part of the region’s natural character. Fifty-five bird species listed in Annex I of the Directive use the area; 10 of these species breed there regularly. The two figures describe different aspects: the first counts species that use the area, while the second refers to the smaller group of species that breed there regularly. These figures add another perspective to the landscape description: they relate to birdlife, while the plateau, meadows and wetlands shape the character of the natural environment.

Hiking and mountain biking

The Sentier Art et Nature runs through the rugged, wild gorges of the Arcueil, following the river. The hiking trail is 10 km long, with a stated walking time of four hours. This route combines a striking landscape with a practical guide for planning how much time to allow for the hike.

Another route is the third stage of the Grand tour VTT, from Coltines to Rézentières. This signposted, one-way route is 21.6 km long and takes about two and a half hours. Compared with the Sentier Art et Nature, it differs not only in distance and duration, but also in mode of travel and format: this is a mountain bike stage starting in Coltines and finishing in Rézentières. The one-way nature of the route is particularly relevant when making your choice; the four-hour walking time for the hiking trail is not the duration of this VTT stage.

History of the Église Sainte-Madeleine

The Église Sainte-Madeleine also adds a historical dimension to the story of the town. The present-day church was rebuilt in 1843 using elements from the earlier church. The date refers to the rebuilding of the present-day church; at the same time, the reuse of elements points to an older predecessor. The building history and the reused components can thus be understood as two aspects of the same building.

The church houses the painting “Sainte Madeleine,” dated between 1875 and 1901 and created by Edouard Amable Onslow after “Le Guide.” Its date is later than the 1843 rebuilding: the church and the painting therefore represent different points in time, rather than describing the same period. For culturally minded travellers, the painting adds another specific connection to the Église Sainte-Madeleine alongside its architectural history.
