In Saignes, cultural destinations and opportunities to get active go hand in hand: the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Château and the Église Sainte-Croix offer different architectural details, while the Puy de Saignes and the PR 19 circular trail provide points of reference for a walking excursion. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between the access conditions for the two churches and noting the specific details given for each trail.

Chapelle Notre-Dame du Château: Castle Chapel on the Basalt Rock

The Chapelle Notre-Dame du Château is a Romanesque castle chapel dating from the 12th century. It stands on a basalt rock above Saignes and is the almost intact remnant of the town’s medieval castle. The building, its setting and the castle’s history are thus brought together at one named location. In 1921, the chapel was classified as a historic monument. Its 12th-century date describes its construction history; its classification in 1921 was a later step in its heritage history.

The exterior portal also has a clearly defined feature: it has four small columns, whose capitals and bases are sculpted. A capital forms the top of a column, and a base its bottom. Both parts are therefore decorated at the Chapelle. This draws attention to the structure of the portal, in addition to its Romanesque architecture and its position on the rock. The chapel can be visited only as part of a guided tour. If you plan to visit, check the guided-access arrangements in advance.

Église Sainte-Croix and Its Carved Capitals

The Église Sainte-Croix has 14 carved capitals made of volcanic tuff. Their decorations include plant motifs, mythical creatures and geometric shapes. As you look at them, you can take in these motifs individually: plant forms and mythical creatures appear alongside geometric patterns, while tuff is the material shared by all the capitals. This gives the church a different way to appreciate stone details than the portal of the Chapelle: here, the focus is on the number of capitals, their material and the variety of their ornaments.

The Église Sainte-Croix is open for free visits; you can collect the keys from Saignes town hall by calling 04 71 40 62 80. Key collection may be subject to local arrangements. A quick call before your visit will help you coordinate the handover. At the Chapelle, by contrast, a guided tour is required. These different access conditions are useful to bear in mind if you plan to visit both buildings.

Walking to the Puy de Saignes

A purpose-built path leads to the summit of the Puy de Saignes. There you will find a metal cross, an orientation table and picnic tables. The Puy is freely accessible all year round. This provides both a defined destination for the walk and some specific points of reference at the summit. When planning your time in the area, you can make the summit a destination in its own right; the tables also provide a place to stop for a picnic.

PR 19: Key Details for Planning Your Hike

The PR 19 circular trail, “La table basaltique de Chastel,” starts at Place de la Poste in Saignes. It is marked, 9.4 kilometres long and rated moderate. Its distance, circular format and difficulty level help you assess the route. The purpose-built path to the Puy, by contrast, focuses on the summit and its facilities. These provide different points of reference when choosing a walk: the PR 19 specifies its length and difficulty, while the Puy route highlights the summit and what is there. Check the current trail conditions before setting out.
