Apchon overlooks the glacial valley of the Petite-Rhue. Highlights of a stay include the Château d’Apchon, the Église Saint-Blaise and the wetlands on the basalt plateau. If you are looking for a hotel in Apchon, you can explore the town according to your interests: its architectural and local history, a waymarked trail, or the landscape around the peat bogs each reveal a different side of the destination.

Château d’Apchon and its history

The Château d’Apchon is one of the oldest castles in Auvergne. Its ruins stand on a basalt plug at an altitude of 1,119 metres. The tourism information, updated on 12 August 2026, lists the château as open daily year-round, with free admission. Check the latest information on opening times and access before your visit.

Église Saint-Blaise: chapel and craftsmanship

The Église Saint-Blaise is a Romanesque chapel dating from the 12th century, expanded in the 15th century. Inside are a bronze Black Madonna and 17th-century altarpieces made by local craftspeople. Altarpieces are decorative structures behind an altar; here, they are among the chapel’s later-dated furnishings. The tourism information, updated on 29 January 2025, also lists the Église Saint-Blaise as open daily year-round, with free admission.

Historical walks and summer tours

The “Visite d’Apchon” app takes visitors on a 1.5-hour historical walk. In summer, the Apchon cultural site offers costumed tours organized by the tourist office, the Apchon Patrimoine au coeur association, or both. If these seasonal tours are important to your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance.

Le Suc de Grosmont: circular hike with views

Le Suc de Grosmont is a blue-waymarked circular hike covering 4 km and taking 1.5 hours. From Le Suc de Grosmont, you can see the Monts du Cantal and the wetlands of Grand Combe. The loop also offers the chance to see the Église Saint-Blaise and the ruins of the Château d’Apchon. The “Visite d’Apchon” app also gives a duration of 1.5 hours, but for a historical walk. The two different options therefore have the same stated duration: the 4 km waymarked loop and the historical walk.

Peat bogs and other natural features

The Tourbières de la Sagne et de Grand Combe comprise wetlands on the basalt plateau of Apchon and are designated a Natura 2000 site. You can reach the Tourbières de la sagne de Grand combe in Apchon by following the blue waymark towards Varèze; the out-and-back route is 3 km long. This route differs from the circular hike at Le Suc de Grosmont: here, a waymarked out-and-back trail leads to the wetlands. Another natural and cultural feature is La Font Salée, a spring of naturally carbonated mineral water in the commune of Apchon.
