A trip to Polminhac can focus on historic buildings and varied landscapes along its trails. The castles have a history spanning medieval references and later renovations; the Église Saint-Victor adds a sacred architectural perspective. The routes highlight the river, forest, valley and views. This lets you plan your stay around specific themes.

Castles with different architectural histories

The Château de Pesteils was built in the 13th, 17th and 19th centuries; its keep is 40 metres high. These three centuries point to several phases of construction. At the Château de Clavières, the scope of its protected status is one of its distinctive features: the entire estate is protected, including the chapel, outbuildings, park and pond. It was listed as a historic monument by decree dated 6 October 2021. Thus, Pesteils stands out for its construction phases and 40-metre-high keep, while Clavières is notable for the protection of the entire estate.

The fortified Château de Vixouze is mentioned as early as 1267. It retains a rectangular keep, a chapel built in the 17th century and a bread oven. Other alterations include its conversion into a pavilion in the 17th century, an enclosure wall dating from 1719, a rear building from the 18th century and a well from the 19th century. The dates 1613 and 1777 appear on a barn. These dates offer a glimpse into the estate’s history across several periods, from its early mention to architectural features dating from different centuries.

Church and local history

The Église Saint-Victor also has medieval architectural features. Its oldest parts, including the choir and bell tower, date from the early 13th century. The bell tower may even date from the late 12th century. Jacques Berthieu is one notable figure in the area’s history: he was born in Polminhac and killed as a martyr in Madagascar in 1896.

Trails between river, forest and viewpoints

The marked Boucle des Gravières is an easy, 3-kilometre circular trail along the Cère. It passes through a small wood and by a hidden lake in the valley. The route can be used year-round, weather and snow conditions permitting. Autour du Donjon offers a different focus: the trail climbs to the heights of Polminhac, runs mostly through forest and offers various views of the Monts du Cantal and the castle. The Boucle des châteaux offers various views of the Château de Clavières in Polminhac.

The trails therefore offer different landscapes to explore: the Boucle des Gravières follows the Cère through the valley and past the lake; Autour du Donjon climbs to the heights and opens up views of the Monts du Cantal and the castle. If you’d like to include historic buildings in your plans, the Boucle des châteaux offers views of the Château de Clavières.

Practical information for visiting Pesteils

The access road to the Château de Pesteils is narrow. Visitors with large vehicles are advised to park in Polminhac and walk about 15 minutes to the castle. As practical details may change, check the information before you travel.
