Accommodation in Osenbach
If you are looking for a hotel in Osenbach, you can focus on the themes that concretely shape the town: soil science, architectural history and landscape. The Sentier des Sols focuses on the study of soils; at Bickenberg, the terrain and stone heaps take centre stage. The church of Saint-Etienne and its fountain complex add a range of historic buildings to these natural and cultural themes.
Sentier des Sols: Soil Science and Landscape
The 5.5-kilometre-long Sentier des Sols introduces visitors to soil science. Its 42 information panels provide knowledge about different soil types and physical, chemical, fertility-related and land-use questions. The trail goes beyond simply naming individual soils: their properties, fertility and uses are also among the topics covered.
In addition, the trail features 13 different soils as soil monoliths. Eight of them occur along the trail; five represent characteristic landscape areas of Alsace. The two groups offer different perspectives: soils found along the trail, and examples representing landscape areas in Alsace. The panels explore technical questions, while the monoliths show different soil types—two different ways of exploring the same subject.
The sequence of landscapes is also part of the description of the Sentier des Sols. It first passes through a section of woodland, then leads into an amphitheatre surrounded by wooded hills and encompassing meadows and orchards. Along the way, the study of soils and a succession of woodland, meadows and orchards come together. If you are interested in both, the trail description offers a concrete connection between them.
Bickenberg: Terrain and Stone Heaps
Bickenberg is a sub-Vosges hill in the Rouffach area, rising to between 400 and 500 metres. The limestone areas around Osenbach, including Bickenberg, have plateau-like forms with steep to cliff-like edges. The elevation and description of the limestone areas offer two different points of reference: the hill’s classification and the shape of the terrain.
There are also stone heaps on Bickenberg, known as “steinrudel” or “murgers”. They were formed when stones were cleared from the fields. Their origins go beyond a simple description of the terrain: they explain how these accumulations of stones came about. At Bickenberg, the limestone areas are thus connected with a specific landscape feature.
Saint-Etienne: Church and Fountain Complex
The church of Saint-Etienne was probably built in the first third of the 12th century; the surviving choir or entrance tower belongs to this early building. The surviving Romanesque bell tower has a saddle roof and three rows of openings with small columns. The probable construction date and the features described for the tower offer different clues to its architectural history: on the one hand, its place in time; on the other, the form of the surviving tower.
The Saint-Etienne fountain complex is at the entrance to Osenbach from the direction of Soultzmatt. It was built in 1853, replacing a series of sandstone and wooden troughs. Its location and history complement each other: the complex is associated with a specific entrance to the town, while the date and the troughs it replaced place it in its former architectural context.
Group Visits to the Observatory
Group visits to the Osenbach astronomical observatory can be organised by contacting the responsible association representatives. If you are considering this activity for a group, contacting them in advance is the recommended step for making arrangements.
