Muhlbach-Sur-Munster – Churches and Woodworking
Accommodation in Muhlbach-Sur-Munster
In Muhlbach-Sur-Munster, church history, woodworking and seasonal activities at Gaschney each offer a different focus. The village is one of the 29 municipalities that make up the Hautes Vosges Natura 2000 site. During your stay, you can choose between cultural themes and experiences that change with the seasons.
Churches and architectural history
The Protestant church stands on the site of the former simultaneous church, which was destroyed by bombing on June 21, 1915. The Protestant church was consecrated on January 4, 1930. The Catholic parish church of Saint-Barthélemy was consecrated on May 26, 1929; its design is influenced by the religious Baroque architecture of southern Germany. A document dated to 896 confirmed the Abbey of Munster's ownership of the parish church of Muhlbach-Sur-Munster. The consecrations were just under a year apart, while the document and the former simultaneous church provide a broader historical context.
A simultaneous church is a place of worship shared by several denominations. The term identifies the former church as the predecessor building on the site of the Protestant church. This helps distinguish the 1929 and 1930 consecrations from the parish church's older ownership history.
Woodworking and the history of the Munster Valley
The Musée de la Schlitte et des Métiers du Bois was founded in 1973 and renovated in 1997. It showcases types of wood, forestry and logging work, as well as the processing of wood. It also commemorates the former sled haulers of the Munster Valley and their work transporting logs and firewood.
Gaschney through the seasons
The choice of activities at Gaschney depends on the season. In spring, green forests, wildflowers and shimmering lakes invite you to go hiking and walking, while discovering the flora and fauna of the Vosges. Cycling is among the activities available in summer. In winter, Gaschney offers opportunities for snowshoeing and tobogganing. This gives you a clear comparison for choosing your travel dates: nature watching and walks in spring, cycling in summer, or snowshoeing and tobogganing in winter. Seasonal availability may vary; check the conditions if you plan a particular activity.
The Circuit Historique Gaschney–Reichackerkopf is a circular hike on natural terrain in Muhlbach-Sur-Munster. Check the trail conditions before setting out.
Local drinks and seasonal menus
Local products also give the village its own distinctive character. The Brasserie du Marcaire in Muhlbach-Sur-Munster makes craft beers and lemonades. The Ferme-Auberge du Gaschney offers several seasonal menus; the “Suggestion du fermier” is prepared using products from the farm. The two offerings represent different aspects of the local scene: locally made drinks and seasonal dishes. Menu choices vary by season. If you are planning your visit around a particular menu, check the current selection in advance.
