Yanoshi: Churches, Rákóczi Monuments and Wine
Accommodation in Yanoshi
Yanoshi brings together sacred architectural history, memorial sites and wine. If you are looking for a hotel in Yanoshi, these different themes can help you explore the town according to your interests. The churches represent different architectural periods; monuments mark different historical reference points, and “Beregvidek” stands for winemaking and tasting.
Churches and architectural history
The Reformed Church in Yanoshi was built in 1321, in the 14th century, in the Gothic style. It was rebuilt several times over the course of its history. The Greek Catholic Church, by contrast, was built between 1828 and 1839 in the Neoclassical style. Yanoshi therefore has both a medieval church, later altered several times, and a place of worship from the 19th century. The comparison highlights different architectural periods and denominations: Reformed and Gothic on one side, Greek Catholic and Neoclassical on the other. Chronologically, the Greek Catholic Church was built many centuries after the Reformed Church was established. Its subsequent alterations are a distinct part of its history and complement its early date.
Monuments and memorial sites
A carved monument to Prince Ferenc Rákóczi II stands next to the local council offices on T. Shevchenko Street. A wooden sculpture of Ferenc Rákóczi II was created in 2010 by Hungarian sculptor Tibor Sárosi. Behind the sculpture is a monument erected in 1991 in honor of Yanoshi residents who were persecuted after World War II. The two depictions of Rákóczi and the commemoration of the persecuted residents have different points of reference. The carved depiction and the wooden sculpture show the prince, while the monument behind the sculpture is dedicated to the residents. This helps distinguish the memorial sites by their subject matter, rather than treating them as a single memorial complex.
Wine tasting and other features of the town
The “Beregvidek” wine tasting house invites visitors to learn about the history of winemaking and sample wines from Transcarpathia. Visits are available by request; make arrangements in advance. A description updated on March 25, 2025, lists seven wines for tasting, including “Royal Leanka,” “Black Doctor,” “Tokai furmint,” “Kagor” and “Saperavi.” This links winemaking in Yanoshi to a specific tasting offer and a selection of named varieties.
A description from 2021 mentions life-size moving dinosaur figures at the DinoPark in Yanoshi. As this information dates from 2021, check current access before visiting. There is a park on the grounds of the state enterprise “Berehove Forestry” in Yanoshi. Check access to this park in advance as well if you plan to visit. This helps distinguish the town’s historical features from the other, different topics described in Yanoshi.
