Uzhok brings together a wooden church with a clearly documented construction history and the hiking trail from Uzhok Pass, which leads into the village via the source of the Uzh River. The Uzhanskyi National Park information centre complements these features with information about park routes and attractions. Planning a trip here therefore focuses on cultural history, guidance on park-related topics, and preparation for the hiking trail.

Park Information in Uzhok

The Uzhok branch of Uzhanskyi National Park provides information about the park's tourism and recreation potential, its routes, and attractions. Promotional materials and free Wi-Fi are also available. The information centre is therefore a resource for travellers who want to include park-related activities in their plans. Free Wi-Fi adds a digital option to the information services. If you are planning a visit, check the current opening hours with the park in advance.

St. Michael's Church: History and Context

St. Michael's Church in Uzhok was built and consecrated on June 11, 1745; an old carved inscription on the doorpost attests to this date. It was built in the Boyko style by Pavlo Toniv from the neighbouring village of Bitlia and Ivan Tsyhanin from Tykhy, near Uzhok. The church is considered a landmark of Transcarpathia. As the wooden church of Uzhok, it belongs to the Boyko type within the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region in Poland and Ukraine.” This UNESCO designation places the local history in the broader context of the Carpathian region in Poland and Ukraine, as explicitly named in the World Heritage Site title.

Architectural Form and Preserved Furnishings

A distinctive feature of the church's architecture is the wide gallery that surrounds the entire building. The main part of the church rises above the gallery. Icons, early printed books from the 17th century, and an authentic 18th-century altar have been preserved inside the church. These furnishings offer distinct points of reference in time: the early printed books belong to a century earlier than the construction and consecration date of 1745, while the altar dates from the 18th century. For context, the exterior architectural form and the preserved interior furnishings are two separate aspects.

Hiking Trail from Uzhok Pass

The hiking trail starts at Uzhok Pass and leads to Uzhok via the source of the Uzh River. A small meadow lies at the source, at an altitude of 1,000 metres. For navigation, distinguish clearly between the three points: the pass is the starting point, the source and meadow are along the way, and Uzhok is the destination. You must obtain a permit in advance to visit the border zone on this route. Check the requirements with the park administration before setting out, as they may change.

Planning the trip therefore involves two different preparations: for the church, the focus is on its history and architecture; for the hike, the route and permit go together. The park information centre is particularly useful for route guidance. This makes it possible to include the cultural visit and hiking plans separately in your stay.
