Kamienka between mountain ranges and a valley

Kamienka lies between Spišská Magura and Ľubovnianska vrchovina. The municipality stretches along the valley of the Kamninka stream. These two landscape features place the village in context at different levels: the mountain ranges describe its wider surroundings, while the valley relates it to the stream. If you are considering Kamienka as a destination for a hotel stay, you will find points of interest here in history, cultural heritage and cycling.

The village's history also has several specific points of reference. As early as the Middle Ages, an important trade route from Poland passed through Kamienka. The village appears in 1315 under the name “Petri villa” and in 1342 as “Lapidis”. These dated forms of the name and the trade route of the time offer different historical perspectives on Kamienka.

Cultural Monuments and Traditions

One of the three national cultural monuments in Kamienka is the Greek Catholic Church of “Kostol sv. Petra a Pavla”. It is a Neoclassical building dating from 1790: single-naved, with a straight-ended apse and a tower integrated into the gabled façade. These architectural features give the building a distinct character, while the chapels add their own historical and architectural details.

One of the three chapels is “Zosnutia Presvätej Bohorodičky”, a national cultural monument dating from 1760. “Prícestná kaplnka” is also one of the three national cultural monuments. It is Baroque-Neoclassical and dates from the late 18th century. The two chapels can be distinguished by their dates: one is dated to 1760, while the other is more broadly placed in the late 18th century. “Prícestná kaplnka” stands in the western part of Kamienka and continues to serve its religious purpose.

The folklore ensemble Barvinok from Kamienka is also part of the cultural life. It preserves and presents the customs and traditions of the municipality and the Rusyn minority. These include songs, dances, traditional programmes and church singing. Thus, alongside the buildings, musical and dance traditions are also central. If you take cultural themes into account when choosing a destination, in Kamienka you can appreciate both the history of the churches and chapels and these forms of cultural heritage preservation.

Cycling and Nature

The “Cykloturistický chodník Kamienka” cycle route leads to the Kvašná voda I. (Ščava) mineral spring. The paved route is 295.13 metres long, starts in the Šťava district and ends where it connects to an existing field path. It was created in the municipality's cadastral area to promote cycle tourism and recreational activities. Its length and the stated starting and ending points describe a short, specific section of the route.

The Kamienska tisina nature reserve lies within the cadastral area of Kamienka. It protects original fir-beech and beech-fir stands with occurrences of the rare yew. The area is not open to the public. If nature is a factor in your travel plans, this access restriction is important: the distinctive landscape is part of Kamienka's natural setting, but the reserve is not a publicly accessible destination for excursions.

This gives you a varied but clearly defined picture of Kamienka as a place to stay: historical forms of the name and a medieval trade route, cultural monuments and Rusyn traditions, and a short paved cycle route. You can use whichever of these themes matters most to you as a guide when searching for a suitable hotel and choosing your destination.
