When looking for a hotel in Mníšek Nad Popradom, the area’s features can help guide your travel plans: marked hiking trails, its location on the Poprad River and the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This lets you consider hiking routes, the border landscape and church art as separate focal points.

Landscape on the Poprad River

Mníšek Nad Popradom lies in the valley of the Hraničná stream. The Poprad River forms the municipality’s border with Poland. The lowest point in the area is also connected to the river: it lies below the church at 382 metres above sea level, where the Poprad leaves Slovak territory. It is also the lowest point in the district. This elevation therefore refers to a specific point on the river, not to a general elevation for the entire area.

Marked hiking trails

Two trails are described for planning hikes, with their endpoints and total lengths. Marked trail 2805 runs from Mníšek Nad Popradom at the state border to the Sulínka mineral spring and is 10.9 kilometres long. The also-marked trail 5881 runs from Osly via Mníšek Nad Popradom to Kače; it is 11.2 kilometres long. The difference between the stated total lengths is 0.3 kilometres. For choosing a route, the respective endpoints distinguish the trails more clearly than this small difference in length. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Border location and planned cycling route

The road border crossing connects the municipality with a recreational and spa area in Poland. The planned EuroVelo 11 route offers another cross-border perspective: it is intended to connect the Mníšek Nad Popradom border crossing with the town of Stará Ľubovňa through the Poprad valley. The route is to be regarded as planned; its implementation on the ground and its signage may change. The Poprad thus has two distinct roles: as the river that forms the border with Poland, and as the valley through which the planned cycling route is intended to run.

History and church art

A surviving written reference from 1323 mentions hermits at this location and uses the expression “locus heremitoris”. Another cultural reference is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, celebrated in Mníšek Nad Popradom on 14 September as a Christian feast called “odpust”. A medieval written reference and a religious tradition with a fixed date thus offer different ways of exploring the area’s history.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was built around 1900 as a pseudo-Romanesque, three-aisled pseudo-basilica with classicist elements. The artworks inside include a Baroque-classicist sculptural group of the Calvary from the late 18th century and paintings on the side altars. One depicts the Madonna of the Rosary by Jozef Hanula; another depicts the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. This painting is by F. Staudinger, a Viennese painter, and is dated 1869. The dates therefore range from the late-18th-century sculptural group to the 1869 painting and the church building around 1900. Architecture, painting and sculpture each offer their own points of interest for exploring the church.
