Zdiar: Folk Architecture and Excursions in the Belianske Tatry
Accommodation in Zdiar
A trip to Ždiar can be planned around a range of interests: folk architecture, folklore, excursions in the Belianske Tatry or seasonal winter activities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Zdiar, you can start by narrowing down the reason for your trip.
Folk Architecture and Folklore
Ždiar is one of only ten Slovak folk architecture reserves. The reserve includes 236 listed buildings in four groups of vernacular structures; the number of listed buildings may be updated by the heritage authorities. The scale and layout make the local building culture a distinctive subject for trip planning, which can be combined with the village’s folk offerings.
Traditional costumes in Ždiar feature plant and animal motifs from the Belianske Tatry and the area around Ždiar. The choice of motifs thus brings together the natural features of the mountains and local costume culture. The Goralské folklórne slávnosti are held in Ždiar every year. If you would like to make this cultural event the occasion for your trip, check the exact event date in advance.
At Ždiarsky dom, visitors can take part in a reenactment of a Ždiar wedding. This adds an interactive activity to the experience of local architecture and traditional costumes. Check the current museum programme before your trip.
Monkova dolina and the Belianske Tatry
Ždiar is a starting point for excursions in the Belianske Tatry. One specific route is the Monkova dolina educational trail: it starts in Ždiar and runs for six kilometres to Kopské sedlo. With a starting point in the village, a stated length and a named destination, the hike can be considered a distinct focus when planning your trip.
Monkova dolina was formed by glacial activity; remnants of lateral moraines have been preserved on its slopes. There is also a 140-metre-high rock step with cascades of waterfalls. In addition to the destination at Kopské sedlo, the valley’s glacially shaped slopes and waterfalls are also notable features.
Winter Activities
The Ski Centre Strachan in Ždiar offers Ski Cross on a 550-metre course with jumps, rollers and banked turns. The seasonal configuration of the course may change; check the latest information about the course before your visit.
The Ždiar–Strednica ski area has six ski lifts and a 550-metre-long four-person chairlift. It also has four kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails. The two 550-metre measurements refer to different things: at Strachan, the length refers to the Ski Cross course; at Ždiar–Strednica, it refers to the chairlift. This distinction helps you tell course length and lift length apart when planning your winter trip. Strachan offers Ski Cross, while Strednica also has groomed cross-country ski trails.
