Spišské Bystré: Cultural Heritage, Nature and Winter Sports
Accommodation in Spišské Bystré
Spišské Bystré combines historic religious buildings, a distinctive natural area and winter sports at Ski Centre Kubašok. This offers different focal points for planning your trip: architectural history, nature and ski lessons.
Churches, Chapels and Crafts
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Michael is in Spišské Bystré. It was originally Gothic and dates from 1306; it was altered in 1706 and expanded in the Neo-Gothic style in 1926. This sequence reveals several building phases: the Gothic origins, the alterations and the later expansion belong to different centuries.
Several chapels also offer tangible points of reference for the town’s history. The Chapel of the Virgin Mary was built in the 19th century; it was located beyond the village and is now on SNP Street. The Chapel of St. Barbara also dates from the 19th century and stands on the road to Hranovnica. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, also from the same century, stands beside the church in the town centre. The Chapel of the Holy Cross is on the road towards Kravany. In the case of the Marian Chapel, an account of its former location sits alongside its present-day street address.
The monument at Foľuš is a wooden structure with a waterwheel that was used for fulling cloth. Fulling is the process of working cloth to make it denser. Alongside the religious buildings, this monument represents a craft-related purpose; its historical use offers a different perspective from the architectural history of the churches and chapels.
Nature Reserve and Hiking Route
The 69-hectare Hranovnická dubina Nature Reserve has been located in Spišské Bystré since 1966. It is home to the northernmost native stand of sessile oak. The area and oak stand offer two different points of reference: the 69 hectares give an idea of the reserve’s size, while the sessile oak marks its botanical distinction. This specific natural feature complements the historical perspective on the town.
A blue-marked hiking trail starts in the centre of Spišské Bystré and heads south out of the town. Its starting point and direction can help you plan your hike.
Ski Lessons and Getting There
Ski Centre Kubašok has a ski and snowboard school. Complete beginners start lessons on the children’s lift; after a few hours, they move on to a larger lift. Before your trip, check whether lessons are available during your chosen dates.
