Pavlová on the Hron: Landscape, History and Culture
Accommodation in Pavlová
Landscape between the Hron and the hills
Pavlová lies on the left bank of the Hron, at the foot of the Ipeľská pahorkatina hills. The eastern part of the village lies on deforested ridges of the hills, which are cut through by deep erosion gullies. The western cadastral area includes 200 hectares of the damp Hron floodplain. The damp Hron floodplain in the western cadastral area contrasts with the deforested eastern ridges and their deep erosion gullies. The village’s setting therefore brings together the river, the hills and a clearly defined floodplain area.
Archaeological traces and church history
In Pavlová, archaeological evidence points to settlement dating back to the Stone Age. An archaeological cemetery from the time of the arrival of the Hungarians has also been excavated. An entry from 1135 records a mill in Pavlová on the lower Hron as property of Bzovík Monastery.
The history of the Church of St Lawrence can also be traced through several building phases. The first church dated to 1717 and was demolished. A new stone church was built in its place between 1884 and 1888. This church was destroyed during the Second World War and rebuilt in the 1960s with financial support from local residents. The sequence therefore includes the first church, the new stone building and its reconstruction after the destruction.
Traditions and cultural life
Pavlová is part of an ethnographic group of six municipalities associated with a so-called women’s costume with a short skirt. The costume is believed to date back to the period of Ottoman rule. Its preservation and occasional presentation are an important element of Pavlová’s local national culture. The connection to six municipalities places the costume within a shared ethnographic context; its occasional presentation also provides a tangible cultural link to the village. If this is important for your trip, check specific event dates in advance.
The Szikince Festival is organised jointly with other municipalities along the banks of the Perec. Concerts, puppet shows and theatre performances are also held in the municipal park and on the stage. A folk ensemble has been active since 2008; its performances enrich municipal events. A jointly organised festival, stage performances and folk performances are therefore among the different forms of cultural life in Pavlová.
Cycling and getting there
The Južným regiónom cycling route is intended for mountain bikes. A route publication from 2022 rates it REKREA, meaning easy; it may not reflect subsequent changes in trail conditions. Check current route conditions before setting out. Pavlová is also served by regular bus route 404445. Check current departure times before travelling. This provides two different pieces of information for planning: the rating of an MTB route and the bus connection.
