Vyšná Rybnica brings together a landscape of water, protected nature and the history of a technical monument. Morské oko, the Machnatý vrch Nature Reserve, the Greek Catholic church and a historic water mill offer different themes to consider when planning a trip. When choosing where to stay, first decide whether nature, water or local history will be the focus of your visit.

Morské oko and protected nature

Morské oko lies within the cadastral areas of Remetské Hámre and Vyšná Rybnica. It covers 13.80 hectares and has an average depth of 25 metres. It has had its present form since the 1980s, when a dam was built and the water level was raised by about five metres. This development gives the body of water a clear historical dimension alongside its hydrological characteristics.

A forest educational trail runs through the old-growth forest around Morské oko. In some sections, it follows the trackbed of the former forest railway. Trail conditions may vary; if you plan to walk the trail, check conditions in advance. An asphalt road leads to the car park below Morské oko. You should also check local road conditions before setting out.

The Machnatý vrch Nature Reserve offers a different natural attraction. It was established in 1985, covers 3.18 hectares and lies within the cadastral area of Vyšná Rybnica. The rare and endangered plant species Chimaphila umbellata grows there. The two protected areas thus represent different aspects of nature: Morské oko as a body of water, and Machnatý vrch as a habitat for a particularly notable plant species.

The water mill and local history

The water mill in Vyšná Rybnica is a national cultural monument. Its mechanism extends over more than three floors and is powered by Francis turbines. In 2007, it was reconstructed to remain as faithful as possible to the original.

The Greek Catholic church is also part of the local history. It is dedicated to the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God. At a liturgy on 18 August, the church’s restored exterior and interior, along with its reconstructed iconostasis, were consecrated. The occasion marked the 600th anniversary of the first written mention of Vyšná Rybnica. The church and the water mill thus offer two different perspectives on the local cultural heritage: sacred furnishings and a technical installation.

Water and practical information

The Vyšná Rybnica Reservoir is distinct from Morské oko. At its maximum permitted water level, its flooded area is 95,000 square metres; its total volume is stated as 427,950 cubic metres. The František Oravec Memorial is also associated with the reservoir: another edition was held there on 11 May 2025. At that edition, fishing was exclusively with a bottom rod.

For public transport, the Vyšná Rybnica, čakáreň stop is listed in fare zone 422 of IDS Východ. Check the timetable for the specific connection on your travel dates. The Motorest “Rybnička” is a possible place to eat; check whether it is currently open before you travel.
