Michalovce District offers two distinct ways to explore it: cultural history at manor houses and castles, and waterside leisure. When planning, you can first decide whether exhibitions and historic buildings or swimming, water sports and hiking should take priority.

Museums and Architectural History

At the Zemplín Museum, the building and exhibition themes go hand in hand. The museum is housed in a restored central Baroque-Classical manor house designated as a cultural monument. The Klenotnica exhibition is on the first floor. Permanent exhibitions on art history and sacred art are installed in the central part of Sztáray Manor House, where the museum is based. This lets you appreciate the architecture of the cultural monument and the two exhibition themes as distinct aspects of the museum.

At Senné Manor, the building’s history spans two centuries: the manor house was built in the 16th century and remodelled in the Renaissance style in the 17th century. It is a national cultural monument and serves as an entrance to the protected Senianske rybníky bird area. It is also considered one of the oldest and one of the last surviving buildings of its kind in Lower Zemplín. The site thus connects architectural history with the protected bird area.

Water and Outdoor Activities

Zemplínska Šírava is Slovakia’s second-largest reservoir and has seven recreation centres. It offers opportunities for swimming, water sports and fishing, as well as mountain biking and hiking. Jet skis, yachts and pedal boats are also among the leisure activities mentioned there. The range extends from activities on the water to trips on foot or by mountain bike.

At Vinianske Jazero, you can swim, sail and hike; in winter, ice skating is also possible. The lake covers an area of 8 hectares. The range of activities changes with the seasons: swimming and sailing give way to winter activities on the ice. From Vinné, the lake can be reached by a road that runs around it, as well as by hiking trails.

Hiking Trails and Starting Points

Vinné Castle was declared a cultural monument in 1963. Marked hiking trails lead to the castle from Vinianske Jazero and from the Hôrka, Medvedia Hora and Kamenec holiday centres on Zemplínska Šírava. When planning your route, you can choose between starting at the lake or at the listed holiday centres.

Several SAD bus services run from both bus stations in Michalovce to Zemplínska Šírava; there is also access via a paved four-lane road. Check the timetable for your specific journey. The Náučný chodník Vihorlatskými bučinami nature trail begins in Poruba pod Vihorlatom, at the foot of the Vihorlatské vrchy. As trail conditions can change seasonally, it is worth checking before setting out.

Regional Flavours

The wider Lower Zemplín region also offers a culinary connection: travellers can sample holúbky as a regional speciality and drink Tokaj wine.
