Veľký Kamenec offers three distinct starting points for planning your trip: Tarbucka as a natural area, a marked hiking trail, and local history encompassing a castle, church and manor house. These topics cover different aspects: the natural area is notable for its geology and species protection, the buildings represent several historical periods, and the trail connects three named places.

Tarbucka: Landscape and nature

The Tarbucka Natura 2000 site is an area of European importance and lies within the cadastral territories of Streda nad Bodrogom and Veľký Kamenec. Its combination of andesite hills and windblown sands is a geological highlight. The volcanic hills consist mainly of andesite; sands blown from the slopes lie on top of them. This phenomenon is considered geomorphologically rare in Europe.

Tarbucka is also the only currently known and confirmed location in Slovakia where the endangered European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) both occurs and reproduces. For your trip planning, geology and species protection can be considered as two distinct nature-related topics.

Hiking trail and orientation

The marked “Veľký Kamenec – Tarbucka – Streda nad Bodrogom” hiking trail leads from Veľký Kamenec via Tarbucka to Streda nad Bodrogom. Its route is therefore clearly defined by the three place names. Check the markings on site.

At the beginning of the small park in Veľký Kamenec, there is an information board with a map of the route. Another information board and a viewpoint are located at the summit of Tarbucka. The map at the park entrance and the additional board at the summit thus mark different orientation points along the landscape described. Wooden statues of medieval Hungarian warriors also stand in the European Park in Veľký Kamenec.

Castle, church and manor house

Veľký Kamenec Castle is mentioned in a document from 1323. One of its characteristic Renaissance fortification features is a massive pentagonal bastion with loopholes on three levels; it is the best-preserved feature of its kind at the castle. Its shape and the three levels of loopholes provide a specific detail of the fortification architecture.

A Baroque manor house was built below the ruins of the medieval castle at the end of the 17th century. During a major renovation at the beginning of the 19th century, it acquired its present-day Neoclassical appearance. Its building history can thus be divided into two successive styles: the Baroque building was followed by a Neoclassical redesign.

The Church of Saint Joseph the Foster Father also stands on a hill not far from the castle. The Neoclassical church was built between 1801 and 1814. Together with the manor house and castle, it adds another building and a distinct construction period to the local history.

The historic character of the town

Local livelihoods are also part of the picture of Veľký Kamenec, alongside its natural areas and architectural history. Agriculture and viticulture were local occupations; even after 1918, the residents’ occupations did not change. This historical connection complements the buildings and the distinctive features of Tarbucka with a glimpse into the working life of the town.
