Several eras and themes come together in Trebišov: the late Baroque castle, the history of Parič Water Castle, church art and an extensive park. The local history museum continues this rich variety with exhibitions on history, archaeology, agriculture and viticulture. When planning your stay, you can take these different cultural highlights into account.

Castle and Museum: Architectural History and Collections

The late Baroque castle was built in 1786 by Count Imrich Csáky and later redesigned in the Classicist style. Today it houses the local history museum, whose exhibitions also extend into adjacent listed buildings.

The three guided tours focus on different subjects. The first covers the Andrássy family and the castle, including Tokaj viticulture. The second explores the archaeology of southern Zemplín and the treasury of the Štefan Dobó family. The third covers hunting and wildlife protection, as well as folk woodcarving, crafts and agricultural machinery. As programme details may change, it is worth checking the current tours before your visit.

The permanent collections include Tokaj viticulture and winemaking, with an archive of Tokaj wines; the history of agriculture in eastern Slovakia; and the folk costume and traditional crafts of Zemplín. They also include historic tractors and internal combustion engines, steam ploughs and cable ploughs, the development of threshing in eastern Slovakia, and archaeological monuments from the Trebišov district. Individual exhibitions may be rearranged. The museum also offers a Tokaj wine tasting; check its availability before your visit.

Mausoleum, Water Castle and Monastery

The mausoleum of Count Július Andrássy was built in 1893 in the Neo-Gothic style, based on a design by German architect Arthur Meining. It contains a sarcophagus by Budapest sculptor Juraj Zala, created between 1893 and 1895. Count Július Andrássy has been buried there since 1894.

The older architectural history is represented by Parič Water Castle. Its first building phase is dated to the 12th or 13th century; the polygonal stone fortification was built at the beginning of the 14th century. The complex included an early Gothic palace, an entrance tower and a stone-lined well in the castle courtyard. Polish groschen and Hungarian silver coins found at Parič attest to transit trade with Poland between the 15th and 17th centuries.

The two-storey Pauline monastery is also part of Trebišov’s architectural history. It was built in 1502 at the instigation of Palatine Imrich of the Perényi family.

Two Churches, Different Artistic and Architectural Periods

The Roman Catholic Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary dates back to an original building constructed before 1404. This Gothic monument has a net vault with 63 compartments. Inside are eight compositions depicting the life of the Virgin Mary and twelve paintings from the legendary life of Saint Paul the Hermit. Two monumental Rococo paintings date from 1777.

The Greek Catholic Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God was built between 1818 and 1825 and consecrated on 28 August 1825, the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God. Its interior restoration was completed in 1886. A carved iconostasis and a pulpit by woodcarver Peter Kovaliczky were added at that time; the dominant icon depicts the death of the Virgin Mary. Comparing the two churches takes you from an early, Gothic-influenced building to a church with a later iconostasis and pulpit.

Historic Park and Cycling Tourism

Landscaping of the historic town park began in the last third of the 18th century in connection with the construction of the castle. The 62-hectare park was created from an original floodplain forest. Its vegetation includes historic and naturally established coniferous and deciduous trees, shrubs and other plants. The history of the park thus complements the buildings with its own perspective on the town’s development.

In the Trebišov forest park, the Bučov les health area serves residents and visitors as part of cycling tourism. In Trebišov, architectural and collection history, parkland and cycling tourism offer different ways to experience a stay.
