Veľká Tŕňa lies in the southern part of the East Slovak Lowland, at the southwestern foothills of the Zemplín Mountains. Vineyards and rolling hills surround the municipality. You can explore the village and its history through several themes: Tokaj wine cellars, viticulture, two churches with distinct construction phases, and cycling and hiking trails through the cadastral area. When choosing a stay, you can consider whether you would prefer to focus on the cultural landscape, sacred architecture or outdoor activities.

Wine Landscape and Historic Cellars

The Veľká Tŕňa Conservation Area protects the heritage value of the area around the Tokaj wine cellars. This includes the access network and the connection to the neighbouring settlement structure of the municipality. The protection therefore also concerns the relationship between the cellars and their settlement surroundings.

The Gazdovské pivnice consist of 33 stone portals leading to historic Tokaj wine cellars dating from the 15th century. Some historic wine cellars in Veľká Tŕňa date back to the time of the Turkish wars. They are hewn into the rock and are 8 to 16 metres deep. The portals and the cellars extending deep into the rock offer different insights into the architectural forms of the local wine cellars.

Viticulture extends beyond the village: for centuries, local winemakers have cultivated vines on the slopes of seven Tokaj municipalities: Čerhov, Veľká Tŕňa, Malá Tŕňa, Bara, Černochov, Viničky and Slovenské Nové Mesto. The Ostrožovič winery is located in Veľká Tŕňa. Its winemaking has a history of more than 30 years, and its wines have been awarded medals. During a visit to Veľká Tŕňa, you can taste Tokaj wine and choose from up to ten varieties; the selection may vary. If you are planning a visit to the winery, check the current visitor arrangements separately.

Two Churches, Different Construction Phases

The Greek Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity was built in 1828 in the Neoclassical style. Its tower has four storeys and features string courses and pilaster strips. The Baroque onion dome sits on a disc cornice below the roof. The building therefore combines Neoclassical design with a Baroque roof form.

The Reformed Church stands on a gentle slope above Veľká Tŕňa, at the edge of the settlement. Its western section is Romanesque and includes the tower and gallery; the eastern section was rebuilt in 1936 on Gothic foundations. The western gallery is considered the church’s most valuable part. In comparison with the Church of the Holy Trinity, built in 1828, it offers a different architectural history to explore: a Romanesque western section, Gothic foundations in the east, and the 1936 reconstruction.

Cycling and Hiking Trails

Several cycling routes and hiking trails for pedestrians pass through the cadastral area of Veľká Tŕňa. This adds an active way to experience the landscape to the themes of viticulture and architecture.
