Discover Spišská Nová Ves
Accommodation in Spišská Nová Ves
When looking for a hotel in Spišská Nová Ves, the city’s highlights can help you decide what to focus on during your stay. They include architectural history and art, as well as routes for hiking and cycling; in winter, a nature trail can also be used on skis. The destinations vary in scale and character. Consider whether you would like to include historic architecture and views, regional art, or outdoor activities in a forest landscape in your trip.
City History, Views, and Art
Spišská Nová Ves has been designated an urban conservation area since 1992. One of its most prominent historic buildings is the Roman Catholic Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Its 14th-century architecture has been partly preserved in its original state, although the church has been repaired and altered several times. The 87-meter-high tower offers views of the city, the surrounding area, and the panorama of the High Tatras. Guided climbs are offered year-round by the Tourist Information Center. If you would like to include the tower in your plans, check the information center’s current schedule.
The building of the Spiš Museum is also one of the city’s most valuable historic sites. Its foundations probably date from the 15th century. The Spiš Artists’ Gallery focuses on works by artists with ties to the region. Its program includes creative workshops for schools and themed workshops related to current exhibitions. Individual workshop dates may vary; check the relevant program if a workshop is important to your visit.
Nature Trails and Cycling Routes
The Banský nature trail in Novoveská Huta explores the mining and smelting history of the Spiš region. Set in an attractive forest landscape, it offers shorter and longer walks. You can use the trail on foot, by bike, or on skis in winter. This gives you a choice of ways to get around, while the trail’s focus remains the history of mining.
The DIANA forestry nature trail is also located in Novoveská Huta. It is managed by Lesy mesta Spišská Nová Ves, is approximately 2,200 meters long, and follows existing forest roads and paths.
For cyclists, the Novoveské singletracks offer two one-way routes: a children’s route about 300 meters long and the approximately 1.5-kilometer Novoveský Trail. The lengths distinguish the two options; one is specifically designated as a children’s route. As trail layouts can change, check the latest information before setting out.
Another option is the Východným okrajom Slovenského raja cycling loop. It starts and ends at Spišská Nová Ves railway station and passes through the protected zone of Slovenský raj National Park. Unlike the two singletracks, it is characterized by its start and end points and its route through the protected zone. Route conditions and markings can change; check them before your ride.
Plan Your Journey
